    November 23, 1933 - March 23, 2008
SALEM - Gary Glen Jones passed away on Easter afternoon, March 23, 2008, after a courageous two year battle with cancer. He will be remembered as a caring gentleman who loved life and always found time to share a smile and a word of encouragement.
Gary was born on November 23, 1933, in The Dalles, Oregon, to Glen A. and Frances G. Jones. He was the second of three children, and was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-one years, Justine L. Jones; his parents; his brother, Richard Jones; and his sister, Patricia Sherwood.
The family moved from The Dalles to Dayton, Wash., where Gary attended elementary school and junior high school. While he was a freshman at Dayton High School, the family moved to Burns, Ore.Gary was a three year football letterman at Burns High School, where he played center and defensive tackle. He was also a varsity basketball player and was a field specialist on the track team. After graduating from Burns High in June of 1952, Gary enrolled at Willamette University. While at Willamette, he joined the Sigma Chi Fraternity, played football for Coach Ted Ogdahl, and joined the Air Force ROTC program. During his busy freshman year, Gary also met the love of his life, Justine Louise Lewis. After a weekend of camping in the Steens Mountains, Gary proposed to Justine while driving between Burns and Bend. (He recently said that it probably wasn't fair to propose to her out on Hwy. 20, as she knew it was a long walk back to Salem). The two of them were married on November, 5, 1954, and moved to Eugene where he then enrolled at the University of Oregon. While at Oregon, Gary majored in Business Administration, and also joined the Army ROTC program. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oregon in June, 1956.
Gary completed his basic training at Ft. Lewis during the summer of 1955, and on July 23, 1956, reported for duty with the United States Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. While at Fort Sill, he completed his field artillery training. Justine, who was, by then, well into her first pregnancy, "enjoyed" the sweltering heat and the dusty heartland of Oklahoma while they lived in cramped base housing during that long summer of 1956. In October of 1956, Gary and Justine moved to California, where Gary continued to serve with the Army while stationed at Fort Ord, California, and Camp Roberts.
Their first child, Ginger Gay, was born in December of 1956, in Carmel, California. Their second child, Bradley Glen, was also born in Carmel, in June of 1958.
Gary attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant, and received his Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army on July 23, 1958. He then continued to serve his Country as an officer with the U. S. Army Reserves from July of 1956 until July of 1964. During the summer of 1958, Gary and Justine and their two children moved to Salem, Oregon, where Gary began working for the Marvin Lewis Oil Co. as a service station manager, delivery truck driver, and transport truck driver. In March, 1960, their third child, Roderick Merrill, was born in Salem. Just as they became "empty nesters," in 1978, Gary and Justine also welcomed their nephew, Greg Sherwood, into their home after Greg's father passed away as a result of a tragic plane crash.
In the summer of 1960, Gary began working for the Oregon Highway Department as a right of way appraiser. That fall, and during the next four years, while continuing to work full-time, he spent long hours in the evenings commuting to and from Portland while attending night school at the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College. He received his LLB from Northwestern in May of 1964, and passed the Oregon State Bar Exam in the summer of 1964.
After passing the Bar Exam, Gary spent one year working as a title examiner for Pacific Title Co., and then accepted a position with the Salem law firm of Rhoten, Rhoten and Speerstra, where he began a long career as a probate and
estate planning lawyer. He continued to work as a partner in that firm until 1982, when he opened his own law office in the Pioneer Trust Bank building. In 1998, Gary moved his law practice to Court Street, where he joined his son Rod, and the two practiced together for the last ten years of Gary's life.
Gary's legal career spanned five decades, and his service to the profession included serving on the Marion County Bar Association Board of Directors from 1977-81, President of the Marion County Bar Association in 1981, Co-chair of the Medical-Legal committee in 1977, Bar Bulletin Editor in 1981, Secretary for the Oregon State Bar Workers' Compensation Section, Willamette Valley Estate Planning Council charter member, board member, and Past President. During his career he also served on many Oregon Sate Bar Association Committees, including the Committee on Probate and Procedure, Section on Estate Planning and Procedure, Standards Committee for the Workers' Compensation Section, OSB Legal Assistant's Probate Manual Editorial Committee, and the Local Professional Responsibility Committee. He was also a speaker at many estate planning and probate seminars, and enjoyed mentoring young members of the bar.
Gary loved to help others and felt that his work allowed him to give peace of mind to his clients. He considered all of his clients to be his friends, and Gary continued working until one week prior to his death.
Community service was important to Gary, and during his lifetime, he was a member of many groups and organizations including the Salem Chamber of Commerce, and the Salem Downtown Rotary Club where he served on the board of directors, served on the Rotary Foundation Board, and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Gary also served as the Chairman of Chapter Advisors for Order of DeMolay, was a member of the Advisory Council, and was a recipient of the DeMolay Cross of Honor and the Legion of Honor from the International Council of DeMolay. He was a member of Salem Masonic Lodge No. 4, and he eventually served several years as Secretary, and was Grand Master of the Lodge in 1970, and served on the Grand Lodge Endowment Committee from 1992 to 1998. In 1999, Gary received the Hiram Award for his many years of Masonic service. Gary also chaired a civic project to provide an outdoor activity area at the Marion County
Juvenile Center in 1971, and he enjoyed serving on the Board of Directors and was President of Board of the Benedictine Nursing Center of Mt. Angel, and served as President and member of the Board of the Benedictine Foundation of Oregon.
In addition to his years of service to his Country, his profession and community, Gary had a deep and strong faith in God. He became a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in 1958, where he continued his quiet service in various positions, including serving as Senior Warden for the Vestry Committee and served on the Finance Committee. Gary also became a member of Salem Evangelical Church, where his commitment to God grew even stronger. He loved attending two to three services every Sunday.
Gary's Christian faith and love of Jesus helped him cope with the loss of his beloved wife, Justine, who passed away on Nov. 22, 2005, after fifty-one years of wonderful marriage. He is truly smiling again as he is now reunited
    with her.
Gary is survived by his three children, Ginger G. Simmons of Salem and her husband, David, Brad G. Jones of Vancouver, Wash., and his wife, Stacey, Rod M. Jones of Salem and his wife, Lori; grand-children, Mary and Marina
Simmons, Corey and Jesse Jones and Nic, Stefanie and McKenna Olson. Gary is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Gay Leisman (Corvallis) and Hazel Jones (Eugene), and a gaggle of loving nieces, nephews and extended family.
The family would like to give a special thanks to God, as well as to many individuals who cared for, treated and prayed for him, allowing us to share an extra year and a half of his wonderful life after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. These individuals include Rev. Bob Burton, Rev. Jay McMurren, Pastor Randy Butler, Pastor Jim Tusant, his friends and "family" at Salem Evangelical Church and St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the entire Salem medical community, including Dr. Loring Winthrop, Dr. Everett Mozell, Dr. Howard Baumann, Dr. Nancy Boutin and the staff at Salem Radiation Oncology, Dr. Maziar Azadpour, Melani Smith at the Anti-coagulation Clinic, Dr. Richard Tobin, Dr. Bob Ponec, and Dr. Bud Pierce and his nurse, Kelly Bellinger, and the entire crew at Hematology Oncology of Salem. We would also like to thank Gary's secretary and friend of over thirty years, Gwen Scruggs, Gary's "mother hens" Twila Anderson and Debbie Large, and the multitudes of his friends and strangers who continued to pray for him as his health declined.
You may spend a peaceful moment of reflection during the viewing at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service, from 10 a.m. - 6p.m. on Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
A short graveside service for Gary G. Jones will take place at 3 p.m. at Restlawn Memory Gardens on Friday, March 28, 2008. Please join us at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2008, for a celebration of life Memorial Service for Gary, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem, Oregon.
In lieu of flowers, contributions or memorial gifts may be made to St. Paul's Memorial Fund, Salem Evangelical Church, or to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.

  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the J.G. Gilliam Dead
Grand Pa Gilliam died at his home West of Old Runnels last Saturday afternoon and was buried Sunday afternoon in Runnels cemetery. J.G. Gilliam was 86 years old. He was one of the early settlers in this country and was well known by the old timers. For a number of years he has been in feeble health. For some time he has been troubled with his eyes, his condition being such that he could not see how to get about, and for this reason it has been some time since he was able to get out and mingle with his many friends. He was a noble old gentleman and to know him was to like him. While his death was not unexpected and while he lived to a ripe old age and rounded out a life of usefulness, yet it is sad to those who were so closely associated with him to give him up. He leaves a host of friends to grieve with the large circle of relatives. after 6 July 1912.
