Jasper Newton Gilliam

M, b. 1830, d. 1862
  • Census: He appeared on the census of 1 June 1830 at Perry County, Illinois.
  • Census: He appeared on the census of 1 June 1840 at Perry County, Illinois.
  • Census*: He appeared on the census of 7 July 1860 at Rock Creek, Clackamas County, Oregon.
  • Note: He In October, 1852, two GILLIAM families arrived in Oregon. The settled first in Clackamas Co. and later in Morrow and Multnomah Counties. They were Charles Gilliam and his wife Mary who had made their way from NC to MO and finally to Oregon. Their children were: 1. William H. GILLIAM who md. Laura Capps in Oregon 2. Rosa Ann Elizabeth Gilliam md. her second cousin Jasper Newton GILLIAM in Perry County, Ill. 3. Alfred GILLIAM b. in Rutherford County, NC. 4. Minerva GILLIAM 5. Joseph Grayson GILLIAM b, in Rutherford County,NC 6. Sarah Sophronia GILLIAM b. in Rutherford Co.,NC. 7. James J.E. GILLIAM B. Rutherford Co.,NC. - Also on this train were 2 of Jasper Newton GILLIAMS sisters. 1. Nancy Jane b. in Ill. who md. Ellison Carl JOHNSON in Oregon and 2. Lavinnie Gilliam b. Ill. who md Silas Foster in Oregon. I am doing a book on these families and would like to contact any and all descendants. Thanks to all. • Note: He I have only recently started research in Oregon. In 1998 I finished a book covering Gilliams from 1635 to present day in NC. I found a very early descendant of the immigrant missing after the 1850 census in McDowell County, NC. As I was playing around online one night I found a query with familiar sounding Gilliam names. these people were in Oregon. Much to my surprise I found that they were my missind NC cousins. After checking with an Oregon cousin I found that the missing NC cousin had md. an Illinois cousin. As plain as I can tell it. Charles Gilliam and his wife Mary went to MO after 1850, Since that was not to theis liking they continued to Illinois where their daughter Rosa Ann Elizabeth md. Jasper Newton Gilliam, her 2nd cousin. From there they left for Oregon, arriving Or in Oct 1852. On this train were Jasper and his new wife Rosa Ann and two of Jaspers sisters. One Was Nancy Jane Gilliam who md Ellison Carl Johnson in Or and Lavinnie who md. Silas Foster in Or.- Charles Gilliam and wife Mary, daughters Sarah Sophronia, Minerva and sons William H. who md. Laura [K]?Capps in Clackamas Co., Alfred, Joseph Grayson [died early], James Erving[died early] Charles died before the first Oct was out. The others syayed a few years in Clackamas Co, went to Multnomah Co and later to Morrow. I am looking for living descendants of these lines. I am in contact with four of the cousins. • Note: He BOOK REVIEW: THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GILLIAM THE IMMIGRANT Compiled by Dean Gilliam Huddleston and Mary Helen Collins (available by order from Dean Gilliam Huddleston, 14520 Bois-D- Ark Road, Manor TX 78653) The John GILLIAM of this book was born 1614 in England and died about January 1651 in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia. It cites his own Non-Cupative will of 15 January 1651 which mentions only his “eldest son John” suggesting there may be other sons and daughters. He is listed as married to Amy FOUNTAYNE. Their one son, John, reportedly died before 1673. Reportedly this John GILLIAM married Margery [HENSHAW] GILLIAM who died 1688 in Surry County VA. The children of this John and Margery are listed as: Elizabeth died 1713 VA; John born abt 1663 Mont Alto, Prince George County VA died 1739 Mont Alto, Prince George County VA; Hinchea born 1665, married Fortune FLOOD, and then died 1734; Charles born abt 1667 died after 1740. The book contains the citations for the documents that led the authors to the conclusions they drew. It contains much on GILLIAM’s of Virginia and North Carolina. These GILLIAM’s also lived in Buncombe County, Rutherford County and Burke County North Carolina. Our own GILLIAM’s are not shown to be connected to this branch of GILLIAM’s.
I had been given the impression that this book contained the ancestors of the Jasper GILLIAM (wife Rozetta Ann) whose son William Buchanan GILLIAM (b. 1858 Johnson Creek, Clackamas Co. OR) has been a mystery to us over the years. However, I did not find this branch of the GILLIAM’s listed in the book so we will continue to search for a connection to these other Oregon GILLIAM families. (Gilliam Clan Newsletter 1999-3 p 24)

NOTE: Dean Gilliam Huddleston died about 1999 - I believe Mary Collins was her sister. in November 1999.
  • PARENTS*: He was the child of Jasper was the son of John Gilliam who died in Franklin County, Illinois on Dec. 1, 1849 per the following note: Lavinnie Gilliam was not a sister of Jasper Newton Gilliam and I doubt that Nancy Jane Gilliam was his sister, but I have no direct proof of this. However, Nancy Jane and Lavinnie Gilliam were probably related in some way. Also, I have seen no proof that they ever lived in Clackamas County, Oregon. Silas Rosen Foster and Lavinnie Gilliam were married in Illinois, not Oregon. I have a copy of their marriage license from Mercer County, Illinois dated August 10, 1869. Census records and Silas Foster's obit tells us that they traveled to Oregon between 1873 and 1878. They lived in Iowa before moving to Oregon after a brief stay in California. The father of Jasper Newton Gilliam was John Gilliam who died in Franklin County, Illinois on Dec. 1, 1849. His probate papers do not list Lavinnie or Nancy Jane among his heirs. The father of Lavinnie Gilliam was John I. Gilliam who was born in Rockbridge Co., VA in about 1814. He was married to Miriam Bridger who was born in Sussex, England. This John Gilliam died in Louisa County, Iowa on Jan. 19, 1857. This information taken from their son's Civil War Pension Application (William Henry Gilliam) and another son's Oregon Old Age Pension application (Albert T. Gilliam. The 1856 Louisa County, Iowa census pg. 86 (this census is on Rootsweb) is the best record of this family:
    Gilliam, John I. 42 VA
    Miriam 46 Eng
    W.H. 14 Ill
    J.C. 12 Ill
    Lavinia 7 Ill
    Elsie H. 8 Ill
    Albert Iowa (b.July 11, 1855)

I am at a dead end with Nancy Jane Gilliam in searching for her parents. I have been unable to find her in the 1850 census. Please contact me if you have information on this family. Thank you, Jerry Wopschall on 28 January 2001.
