Salem - Ronald Schmidt passed into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 10th, 2014. He was born in Silverton, Oregon on February 24, 1927 to Joseph and Nora Schmidt, the oldest of 5 boys. Ronald was a first generation American, whose father came through Ellis Island as a child. Growing up in the Howell Prairie area east of Salem, he attended elementary school at North Howell and Central Howell Schools and high school in Silverton. Ronald joined the Navy during World War II, when he was 17, serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was proud of his military service and loved this country. After Ronald was discharged from the Navy, he came back to the Silverton area and worked on the family farm and with his father, Joseph, doing construction. While attending North Howell Assembly of God Church, he met Mildred Bailey and after a 6 month courtship, they were married on February 10th, 1950. Dad and Mom bought 80 acres of farmland east of Salem where Dad built a house and they started a family. Their children, Connie, Douglas and Cheryl, were all raised on the farm and in the home that Dad and Mom built. Dad had 2 jobs he truly loved, farming and construction. Dad was a farmer first, but he was also a respected builder in the Woodburn, St. Paul and Howell Prairie areas east of Salem. His construction skills were wide and varied, from custom homes to seed cleaners, to onion dryers, to decks on a house. As their children grew, Ronald and Mildred loved to go on construction trips around the world to build churches. They built churches in Africa, remodeled Bible Schools in Spain and put additions on churches in the Samoan Islands. This was Dad's way of telling people around the world about Jesus; he gave them a place they could come and hear God's Word. Dad was a loving husband and father. He treated people as friends and with respect. He was a man of his word and would prefer doing business by his word instead of a contract. He gave people around the world the opportunity to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord. He was curious about people and places. He was a man who did the best he knew how to do in all aspects of his life.
