  • Biography*: He History of Oregon Bio for Josiah C. Nelson
Hon. Josiah C. Nelson, who occupies a position among the front ranks of the surviving early pioneers of Oregon, crossed the plains to the far West in 1844, and without some mention of him a history of Yam Hill county would be incomplete.
Josiah C. Nelson was born in Jackson county, Missouri, May 25, 1827. His ancestors came from England and settled in the South previous to the Revolution, and were participants in the struggle for independence. Mr. Nelson's father, George S. Nelson, born in Tennessee, July 20, 1801; moved to Missouri in 1817. In 1825 he married Miss Margaret Crawford, a native of Tennessee, and of their five children born in Missouri the subject of our sketch is the oldest son. Three of this number are still living. They continued to reside in Missouri until 1844, when the family made a safe journey across the plains. This trip was keenly enjoyed by Josiah, who was then about seventeen and was of an adventurous and ambitious spirit. The high waters which prevailed that season somewhat retarded their progress, but they had plenty of grass for their stock and the delay caused no great trouble. They arrived at Linnton, now Multnomah county, November 26, 1844. One of the children died of mountain fever at Vancouver. They came to the Tualitin plains, near where Hillsborough is now located, and established themselves in a little cabin. This cabin had been built the year before by a man who had sowed and harvested a little wheat and planted some potatoes. On the wheat and potatoes, with occasionally a deer, they subsisted. Their only way of preparing the wheat for food was to rub it out with their hands and boil it. In this way six of them managed to live through the winter. In the spring they came to the Chehalem valley and took a donation claim of 640 acres, located three miles northwest of where Newberg is now situated. At that time there were eight families in the valley, in six of which were Indian or half-breed wives. The father resided on this claim until 1868, when he went to La Fayette, and there spent the closing years of his life. His death occurred December 30, 1884, in his eighty-third year. His wife survived him two years, her death occuring April 15, 1886. They were generous and kind-hearted people, distinguished for their hospitality, both friend and stranger always receiving a welcome at their door. Of their children we record that C.G. Nelson, resides on a farm in Grant county; T.B. lives in La Fayette; one daughter married Clark Rogers, had a family, and died in Portland, in 1875.
Josiah C. remained with his father until 1850. He was then married to Miss Mary E. Bird. A biography of her father, John Bird, a pioneer of 1847, will be found elsewhere in this volume. After their marriage they moved to the donation claim, where Mr. Nelson has since resided. THey had two children, namely: Nancy Jane, born April 2, 1852, became the wife of T.C. Belcher, and is now a resident of Portland; and William W., born October 17, 1854, at present has a position in the customhouse at Portland. After six years of happy wedded life, Mrs. Nelson was called to her last home in July 7, 1856. Four years later, November 25, 1860, Mr. Nelson married Miss Sarah Cummings, who has since been a faithful helpmate in all his undertakings. They have had five children. Cora Alice died when only three years of age. The others are as follows: Cornelia May, wife of A.P. Fletcher, a farmer near La Fayette; Mary El, wife of Thomas Bryant, resides near her father; Maggie L.l, married Dr. Horace J. Littlefield, a physician of Newberg; and the only son, Walter Hugh, lives with his parents.
At one time, for the period of five years, Mr. Nelson was engaged with his brother-in-law, R. P. Bird, in the general merchandise business at La Fayette. The choise farm on which he lives comprises 370 acres. His children have his wife's donation claim. The comfortable frame residence, in which he resides, he built in 1862. He devotes his attention to general farming and stock-raising, keeping graded cattle and horses.
Mr. Nelson has all his life been a Democrat. He has enjoyed the confidence and esteem of his fellow citizens and has thrice had the honor of being elected to the Oregon State Legislature. He was first elected in 1858, thus being a member of the first Legislature of the State. Again in 1882 and in 1884 he was elected to the same position. During his terms of service he did all in his power for the interests of his constituents and the State of Oregon at large. He helped to organize the Grange and was for several years its Treasurer.
During the early mining days on this coast, he was among the first to seek the gold fields of California, being one of the Forty-niners. He met with fair success for the time he worked, but prospected considerably. At one place he took out $56 worth of gold in one hour, from the crevices of a rock on the Sacramento river near Redding. When he returned to Oregon he brought with him about $1,000. Mr. Nelson is an excellent representative of the big-hearted whole-souled, generous pioneer of Oregon, with whom it is an honor and a pleasure to be acquainted. p 917-918 "History of Oregon."

After our business adjourned the president introduced our speaker Bart Littlefield who is again living in our area after retirement and living here as a child attending Newberg schools. He is the grandson of Dr. Hobart Littlefield and says he is the last to carry the name as the other descendants were his great aunts Hazel Davidson and Lelia Eldreidge of St. Paul area. His grandmother was Maggie Nelson Littlefield and he remembers well the big home at 401 N Howard where they entertained many interesting guests. Bart has retired as a "detail man" for McKesson Drug Co so the family was-still medically connected. His three daughters are all nurses. Several generations of Littlefield's were doctors, dentists or pharmacists. Several members of CVH were brought into the world by Dr. Harry Littlefield, with Ruby Brisbine and Clifton Parrett being present. The line of doctors dates back to 1833. Bart and his wife are glad to be living in Newberg and we hope to hear more from them as they become members of our group. He donated many pictures and medical books to be added to our files at Newberg Library. Many events were of interest to us. His mother attended Geo Fox College with Herbert Hoover. The doctor calls were made with horse and buggy.
At the passing of his grandmother Maggie Littlefield (1977 I think) his family driving from Medford were kidnapped by two filipinos who escaped from prison and that story made national headlines. We were shown newspaper clippings and true story magazines of the event that took place near Corvallis. They wanted his car to get away in a rush but his wife refused to leave their young daughters and says he owes his life to her presistence.
His mother was an accomplished musician and played piano for many radio entertainers and Bart sang with the radio programs for several years. He had a rare picture of a troop of Oregon Calvary in Mexico in 1916. Many pictures of Newberg citizens, NHS graduating class of 1914 of which some recognized names. Doris read a tribute written to Dr. Harry Littlefield given by an old Chinese man who lived in this area but had moved to Woodburn at Dr. Harry's funeral he and his little dog walked all the way from Woodburn arriving as the service started. He knelt at the casket and gave a very touching eulogy of faithfulness since Dr. Harry had befriended him in many ways. Walking the 20 miles was certainly a tribute to anyone in those days. In fact there were many Chinese who lived and worked for area farmers as well in Yamhill, Carlton, St. Paul and Newberg.

The Newberg Graphic, Thurs Oct. 27, 1955:

Gunmen Halt Family Enroute To Funeral Here

Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Littlefield and their three small daughters of Medford, who were enroute here to attend the funeral of Mrs. Maggie Littlefield, were held hostage by two gunmen who had escaped from the Lane county jail at Eugene Monday night. Both gunmen were captured.

The Littlefields later were released and allowed to continue their journey. They subsequently were contacted in Newberg through the local police department and requested to supply some routine information to the police officails of Corvallis, through which the gunmen's trail led.

The gunmen, Martin Reyes, 23, San Francisco, and Jose M. DeNasa, 21, San Francisco, used a concealed weapon to escape from the county jail at Eugene, then stole a sheriff's car from a deputy and headed toward Corvallis.

En route, they flagged down a car containing the Littlefields. At first, they continued toward Corvallis with them, then changed plans, locked the family in the sheriff's car, and continued on in the Littlefield car.

Corvallis police were watching for them, having been notified by Littlefield, who made his escape from the sheriff's car with his family. They apprehended DeNasa and jailed him.

Reyes fired at point-blank range at Jimmy Applegate, 39, when he accosted him and his family at a service station. He was wounded in the chest, side and abdomen. Reyes then fired at Officer William C. Bottemiller but missed, then fled on foot. Volunteer searchers, state, county and Corvallis city police formed a posse in search of him. on Thursday, 27 October 1955 Newberg, Yamhill County, Oregon.
