  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Roy Scott Long, 92, of Longview went to be with our Lord and Savior October 8, 2006 at Hospice. He was born February 5, 1914 in Rupert, Idaho to Wilburn and Laura (Agee) Long. He graduated from Monmouth College in Oregon in 1936 and moved to Longview in 1947.

Mr. Long taught eighth grade in Rainier until 1947 when he moved to the Longview School District and taught at Kessler and Monticello. He was a member of the planning committee for Monticello. He retired in 1975. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a pilot trainer. He married Katherine A. Engebretsen on June 14, 1939 at the Longview Community Church. She preceded him in death on March 6, 1998.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandy McMahon; a brother, Calvin Long; a sister, Helen Yelton; two granddaughters, Amy Cox and Kristin McMahon; a great-grandson, Eli Cox; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Roy was a member of the Longview Community Church. He had strong Christian values and lived his life with great integrity. He was a teacher and coach who was devoted to and enjoyed children whether they be students, family or neighbors.

He loved to fish, boat, camp, garden and participate in and watch sports. He set a track record for Monmouth College in the 880. Roy was a craftsman, a skill he learned from his father. He lived in the home he built until his death. He also created many beautiful wood projects. He valued family, friends and neighbors. When Katherine died after 59 years of marriage, he said, "I believe God wants me to continue to enjoy my life here on earth, so that's what I'm going to do." He loved life and the beauty that surrounded him and was content with the simplest things. He has left a Roy-shaped hole in many hearts.

There will be a Memorial Service celebrating his home-going at the Longview Community Church on Saturday, October 21 at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow at New Life Fellowship Church of God. Steele Chapel At Longview Memorial Park is in charge of arrangements.

  • Note*: Roy Scott Long I am writing to honor the life of Mr. Roy Long, a long-time resident and teacher in Longview.

Some may have scanned his recent obituary in the paper. However, I wanted to add a personal note. You see, I know Roy Long as my favorite "Uncle Roy" -- the guy I thought had a city named after him, the guy who let his nieces and nephews drink root beer floats for breakfast and the guy who gave each of us a crisp picture of "George Washington" when we visited.

In the 1950's that impressed me, as I had never owned a dollar before.

Roy Long was a man of impeccable integrity, a man who embraced life with joy and wonder, and a man who truly cared about others around him and invested in shaping the future through his teaching.

Sometimes those who are fortunate enough to live nearly a century do not have many contemporaries left to honor their lives as they transition from life into death.

However, those of us who came after can and do honor these lives. I reference here a few lines from Shakespeare: "His life was gentle; and the elements So mix’d in him, that Nature might stand up, And say to all the world, 'This was a man.'" From Julius Caesar, Act V, sc. 5
