He has made a significant mark on his state, his alma mater, ASU and the Visual Literary Collection at Hayden Library. He was the son of pioneer parents, Getha Munds and Oliver Benedict and the grandson of forefathers who arrived to Arizona in 1868. He was a member of The First Families of Arizona, and Old Settlers of Tempe. Joel Benedict earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees at ASU and his Doctorate at Stanford University. A visionary, an inventor and a master educator, Dr. Benedict succumbed Friday, November 9, 2001 at the age of 92. He has a career of first. Joel was the first director of Audiovisual Services at ASU, established the Central Arizona Film Cooperative, and was founder of KAET, the University's public television station, a well-established author of publications, books, filmstrips, and films. He was a creator of ingenious devices utilizing audiovisual means. Dr. Benedict was selected by Indiana University in 1962 as a visiting professor to establish a ''Six Year Development Plan'' with the Ministry of Education at Enugu, Nigeria in Africa. The assistance was rendered by the U.S. Aid to Developing Countries. He was appointed in 1978 as Director of Media Research and Development to publish teaching materials during his 32 years at ASU. Dr. Benedict bestowed many honors for his achievements. He was awarded the Medallion for Merit for excellent leadership in Public Education. The College of Education chose him to be their first recipient to the Hall of Fame in 1990. Preceding him in death were his parents, Getha and Oliver Benedict, brothers, Franklin J. and James T., sister, Mary Lois Thompson. Surviving are wife, Irene of 40 years, stepdaughter Judy Lepire and Family, brother, Sam Benedict and wife, Kay, five nephews and four nieces. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Memorial Services celebrating his life will be held Saturday, November 17, 2001 at Carr-Tenney's Mortuary 2621 South Rural Road, Tempe at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice of the Valley 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014." after 9 November 2001.
