John Breitling Coulter

• Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Retired Army Lt. Gen. John B. Coulter, 91, a decorated veteran of both world wars and the Korean conflict who was an authority on mountain warfare, died March 6 at his home in Washington after a stroke.
  In February 1943, he was named commanding general of the 85th Infantry Division, and lead it through some of the roughest terrain and toughest fighting of World War II. Attached to Gen. Mark Clark's U.S. Fifth Army in Italy, the 85th Division stormed through the Hitler and Gustav lines, joined with the American forces at Anzio, and was one of the first Allied units to reach Rome. At the end of the war the division secured the strategic Brenner Pass.
  After that war, Gen. Coulter held staff posts in this country and Asia. During the Korean conflict, he commanded the First and Ninth Corps before being named deputy commander of the Eighth Army there on Feb. 15, 1951. He held that post until the war's end. He then served in the office of the Army chief of staff until retiring from active duty in 1952.
  His decorations included three Distinguished Service Medals, 2 Silver Stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star and six Air Medals.
  From 1953 to 1958, he directed the U.N. Korea Reconstruction Agency, where he directed a $148 million aid program. He also served as an adviser to the U.N. secretary general on peacekeeping forces sent to the Middle East after the 1956 Suez War.
  Gen. Coulter was born in San Antonio* (note,other family information indicates that he may have been born in Weatherford, Parker Co., TX) and graduated from the West Texas Military Academy before receiving his commission in 1912. He served in the Mexican Border Campaign and on the staff of the 42nd Infantry (Rainbow) Division in France during World War I. He was a graduate of Army Command and Staff College and both the Army and Navy war colleges.
  He was a member of the Army and Navy Club.
  Survivors include his wife, Marion Ainsa Coulter, of Washington; a son, John Jr., of Houston; a brother, Clifton, of Sayre, PA, and two grandchildren. after 6 March 1982.
