  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Relatives in this city were notified last Monday that Harold Schuette of Valley City, ND, had been accidentally shot and killed at Ogden, Utah, and that the remains would be sent to Waseca for burial. The remains reached here yesterday morning and were taken to the Chris. Sutter home on Third Ave. NE. They were unaccompanied so relatives here have as yet no knowledge as to how the accident happened. The funeral will be held at 2pm today from the Methodist Church in this city. Following the services the remains will be laid to rest in the Immanuel churchyard in Blooming Grove, where two members of the family are buried. The pallbearers are six cousins of deceased, Orlin Schuette, Ervin Kanne, George and Louis Sutter, Sylvester and Donald Remund. Deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Schuette, former residents of Blooming Grove. He was born at Marshall, Minn., 25 years ago. The family later moved to a farm near Valley City, ND, which has since been his home. He is reported to have been a hard working industious young man. He had assisted on the farm until the fall work was completed and was on his way to California to spend the winter when he met his death. He had planned to stop and work his way to the coast, his relatives here say. Besides his parents he is survived by two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Cash of Minneapolis, Mrs. Warton of Summerland, Calif; Dr. SS Schuette of Moscow, Idaho and Clifford Schuette of Valley City.
Later--Since the above was written the family received newspaper clippings telling the sad story of the accident. The following is from the Ogden Standard-Examiner;--"As Israel Oliash, 21, a merchant carelessly displayed a .38 caliber revolver to three prospective customers today noon, the trigger clicked and sent a bullet into the pit of the stomach of Harold Schuette, 25, of Valley City, ND, causing his death. the shooting occurred as in thousadns of cases before, according to Oliash's story to police. He thought the revolver was unloaded. Schuette and two companions were standing before him Oliash's store at 148 Twenty-fifth street. The young merchant twirled the pistol. Two of the officers rushed the wounded boy to the Dee hospital but he died before reaching the operating room. Oliash was in the meantime placed under arrest and is being held in jail on an open charge. City Judge Simon Barlow, ex officio coroner, indicated that an inquest would probably be called.--"The four youths had been working in Montello, Nev. for the Wheel-Wright Construction company, according the the story told police. They came to Ogden Wednesday and were waiting to secure work here with the same company. Schuette was wearing two suits of underwear, two shirts, coat, pair of trousers and boots. He had $25 on his person"--Waseca Herald -12 Dec 1929 after 6 December 1929 Waseca County, Minnesota.
