Former Walla Wallan Richard Yeager, 68, of 5410 33rd Court, Lacey, Wash., died Sept. 7, 2001, at his home. Funeral arrangements are pending at Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St. on 9 Sep 2001

    RICHARD FRANKLIN YEAGER, SR.
Richard Franklin Yeager, Sr., 68, formerly of Walla Walla, passed away Friday,
September 7, 2001 at home surrounded by his family, who loved him
very much, after a brave and courageous fight, from “Malignant Mesothelioma
of the Pleura” caused from asbestos exposure.
He was born in Hermiston, Oregon June 15, 1933 the second child of four
children born to James Robert and Margaret Elaine Waterman Yeager.
When he was 7 years old, his family moved to Walla Walla. He married
Shirley Lorraine Gilliam on September 25th, 1954 in Yuma, Arizona. Dick
served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1955 aboard the USS Bausell DD-845.
After he was discharged from the Navy, he went to work for Boeing while attending
the University of Washington. In 1959, he moved back to Walla
Walla and went to work at Continental Can Company. He also worked at JJ
Newberry’s and at the Elks Club as a bartender. In 1961, he became a full
time employee at Continental Can Company. In 1969, he was one of five
people from the northwest who helped open a new plant in Tempe, Arizona.
In 1975, he transferred to Moses Lake, WA to help start a plant there. In
1979, he was transferred to the Olympia plant as a Production Supervisor.
He remained at that plant until his retirement in 1991. By then Continental
Can Company had become Crown Cork and Seal. In 1993, Dick accepted a consulting assignment from
Crown, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was there for 12 weeks and enjoyed everyday he was there.
After returning from South Africa, Dick and Lorraine bought a travel trailer and went to many places in the
western states. In the wintertime, they were “snowbirds” and stayed at Carriage Manor R.V. Park in Mesa,
Arizona. It was there he took up Silversmith and Lapidary and made some fine pieces of jewelry. He also
went hiking in the Superstition Mountains, played golf several times a week, and played a mean game of
    poker several evenings a week.
Dick’s greatest love was “Fly Fishing”. He and his son would take a week every year and fish different rivers
in Montana, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington. This was a very special time for them. He was a catch
and release fisherman, who believed we should give back to the rivers more than we take from them and preserve
    them for future generations.
He loved his family and enjoyed the yearly family reunions. He enjoyed going to his children’s, grandchildren’s
    and neice’s and nephew’s ballgames.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine of 47 years, four children and their spouses: Debra and Rod Smith of
Anderson, Indiana, Vicki and David Silides Sr. of Mesa, Arizona, Rick and Irma Yeager of Lakeside, California,
and Sharon and Terry Holland of Olympia, Washington. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: T.J.
and spouse Debbie Richey of Milton-Freewater, Oregon, Doug Richey, David Silides Jr. of Mesa Arizona,
Amber Silides of San Diego, California, Jake, Jared and James Holland of Olympia, Washington. Also two
great-grandchildren: Douglas and Alice Richey of Milton-Freewater, Oregon. A brother and sister-in-law:
James Robert Jr. and Laura Yeager of Seattle, Washington. A sister and brother-in-law: Linda and Nat
Palmer of Lacey, Washington. Many nieces and nephews also survive him. He had a very special relationship
with his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Jim and Velma Gilliam and Bob and Deanna Walker, all of
Walla Walla. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother: Jack Yeager.
Dick loved life, had an infectious laugh, he loved the color blue and Walla Walla Sweet Onions; He was a
wonderful husband, father, “papa” and friend to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed. on Sunday, 9 September 2001 Walla Walla, Walla Walla County, Washington.
