- Biography*: He MATT ROBERTS
Thomas Matt Roberts was born near Cook Station, Missouri on August 31, 1877. He was one of eight children born to Thomas L. and Sarah Ann (Blaylock) Roberts who moved to Cook Station from Sligo early in life.
Matt's grandfather, Thomas Roberts was born in 1811 in North Carolina and married Sarah Farris. They moved to Kentucky where they resided only a short time before moving on to Missouri. They settled on the site where the Sligo Furnace Company was later built. Ten children were born to that union, married and settled in the area.
Thomas Matt lived at Cook Station, Missouri until he was 16 years old. He then moved to Cabool, Missouri with a brother, Washington in 1893 and stayed for 7 years before returning to Dent County where he resided the rest of his life.
Helen Alberta (Hayes) Roberts was the daughter of Joseph and Helen (Scott) Hayes and was born August 21, 1885. Her parents were living on what was known as the Wise Norris farm approximately 3 miles East of Salem. At the age of 13 years the family moved to the old Hayes farm one mile East of Salem where she lived until she was married.
On November 6, 1902 Matt and Alberta (better known as Bertie) Roberts were united in marriage by the Rev. A.J. Lay. They moved to a farm owned by his brother, Francis Marion, on Dry Valley, where they lived for about two and one-half years. One daughter, Maxine was born there.
In 1905 they moved to a farm near the mouth of Hutchins Creek where another daughter, Muriel, was born. That farm is commonly known as the Bert Beezley Farm. They resided there for about one year before buying a farm near the head of Hutchins Creek in the Water Fork Community. This farm is now owned by a son, Wilber.
Matt and Alberta bought a farm in the Water Fork Community from Bruce Worsham. Six of their eight children were born and raised there and attended the New Home School.
Thomas Matt Roberts had four brothers and three sisters. John A., Sarah Ann Pettygrew, James W., Francis M., Wiley A., Mary E., and Elizabeth. Three of these children died in infancy.
Helen Alberta (Hayes) Roberts had two brothers and two sisters. They were Joe and Luther (Dick), Clara Gamblin and Ruth Johnson.
To the union of Thomas Matt and Helen Alberta (Hayes) Roberts were born eight children. They were: Maxine Major, Muriel Nie, Wilber E., Arley M., Orben E., Carl L., Irene Wells and Louie E.
Maxine was born Dec. 16, 1905, married Ben Baker and they had one son, Wayne. Later she married Clifton Major and they had two daughters, Dorothy Tipton and Pauline Shults.
Muriel was born July 29, 1907, married Clarence Nie and they had four children, Clarence Jr., Ruby Mincemeyer, Kenneth Erwin, and Brenda Noble.
Wilber was born Oct. 7, 1907, married Bonnie Black and had two adopted children, Ronald and Lavonne.
Arley was born March 2, 1912, married Opal Mounce and had nine children, Ruth, Grace, Bernice, Arlene, Imogene, Kenneth, Larry, Shirley and Sharon.
Orben was born March 11, 1914, and passed away January 14, 1962, married Ruth Ellis and they had one daughter, Beverly Wilson.
Carl was born Nov. 7, 1916 married Goldie Cagle and they had three daughters, Janet, Jean and Carla.
Irene was born March 26, 19191, married Lloyd Wells and they had two sons, Robert and Roger.
Louie was born June 10, 1922, married Irene Chrisco and they had two sons, Howard and David, also one adopted daughter, Jackie.
Matt and Bertie lived on the farm until he retired. They moved into Salem and lived until their death.
Perhaps the most enjoyable event for Matt and Bertie came in 1960 when they celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary with 68 attending. All eight children were present and the last time they were together, as Orben was deceased one year later. Twenty-two of the twenty-four grandchildren and seventeen of their great grand-children helped them celebrate that anniversary.
This couple will be remembered for their honesty, christian faith, and efforts to raise a large family during the great depression.
