Wilber E. Roberts is a lifetime resident of Dent County. Wilber was born and raised on a little farm on Hutchins Creek. He stayed on the farm with his folks till the age of 18. Then at the age of 18 he moved from the farm and went to live in Salem, Missouri. Wilber first worked at the shirt factory and while there he met Bonnie Black. They were married May 30, 1930. Wilber worked for $9.00 a week and Bonnie worked for $5.50 a week. It was not much but they got by. While they were both working at the factory, they bought a 100 acres farm on Hutchins Creek for $2.00 an acre. Then seven years laters, in 1937, they built a four room house on the farm and it only cost them $570.00. They then moved out of town to the farm. Wilber and Bonnie continued to work at the shirt factory. Later Wilber quit work at the factory and went into carpenter work. He worked a few years and then took over the work as a contractor. Wilber built the first part of Barad Factory and also several other business places. He built several houses and also several churches. He also helped build the Baptist Camp at Montauk and built the Catholic School in Salem. Wilber then went to Pacific, Missouri and helped built the Alton Box Board Factory. He worked as a contractor until he retired.
Bonnie worked till 1952, then seh quit work. They bought Wilber's dad's old home place, where they moved their house to in 1951. In 1952 Bonnie went to keeping the neighbor's five children and also nieces and nephews, until they all got school age. Then in the year of 1962 Wilber and Bonnie adopted a little girl and boy. The boy, Ronald, is now 19 and his sister, Lavonne, is now 17. They too will soon be out on their own. Bonnie is now busy with one of her hobbies, quilting, and she also keeps the neighbors grandchildren, with the help of her daughter.
They now have cattle and Tennessee Walking horses on the farm. The whole family keeps busy getting the horses ready for the horse shows in the summer. The family likes to spend most of their free time in the summer going to horseshows and enjoys it very much. Wilber likes to spend most of his time wolf hunting and is also a CB fan, including his wife and kids. They are all quite active in the New Home Church. Wilber is a Deacon in the church and also a teacher. He was also a songleader. Bonnie is the treasurer of the church. They attend every Sunday and Wednesday night, when they can. Wilber and Bonnie are also active in politics. Wilber was chairman for 10 years in the Democratic party. Wilber is a committeeman and Bonnie is a committeewoman in the Meramec Township. Wilber also served on teh Governor's Wild Rivers Advisory Committee while Warren Hearnes was Governor. Wilber is also a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge 118 and has been for 27 years. Bonnie and Wilber are both in the Rebekah Lodge. Their daughter was in the Rainbow Lodge for eight years. Wilber served as Deputy Sheriff for Herb Parsons.
