He was born on August 1, 1912, in Oakland, Oregon, to Frank R. and Ruth Bryan (Hamilton) Ellison. Luther lived his entire life in and around Roseburg. Luther had many vocations, working in a cabinet shop, was a fireman on the railroad, was a Roseburg City Fireman, owned and operated a motel and three fishing boats in Winchester Bay, and owned a chicken ranch in Clackamas, Oregon. Luther will be remembered most for the Ellison Transportation Co. (school bus transportation). He started with one bus and built up to approximately 55 buses before he retired in the early 1970's. Luther was a kind and gentle man, a friend to all, always ready to help anyone in need. Everyone knew him by his trademark, the striped overalls he always wore, probably a holdover from his days firing on the railroad. He was a life member of Laurel Masonic Lodge #13, Scottish Rite, Douglas County Shrine Club, life member of Elks Lodge #326 and Wildlife Safari. The News-Review on Thursday, 21 November 2002 Roseburg, Douglas County, Oregon.
  • Note*: He Life Remembered: Luther Ellison, business leader remembered for fairness
This past summer, Luther Ellison of Roseburg wore his striped bib overalls, slapped on a sticker that read "I was the boss," and went to Stewart Park with his wife, Rose.
As founder of the Ellison Transportation Company, Roseburg's first school bus fleet, Ellison was immediately greeted by more than 40 former employees, most of whom traveled from across Oregon and Washington to pay their respects.
Going to the party and visiting with his longtime colleagues, Rose Ellison said, meant the world to her husband. It was one of his most cherished experiences before he died of cancer on Nov. 10.
"We had the reunion picnic two weeks before he got sick," she said. "I'm glad for that."
Luther Ellison, who was born and raised in Douglas County, accomplished many feats during his 90 years. He toiled as a cabinet maker, he owned and operated a motel and three charter boats in Winchester Bay and he served as a Roseburg fireman. In addition to these achievements, he owned a chicken ranch in Clackamas, he herded sheep on an 80-acre ranch near Glide and he worked as a postmaster in Dillard.
What he's most known for, though, is establishing the Ellison Transportation Co. in the early 1930s. Beginning with only one vehicle, Luther Ellison expanded his fleet to more than 50 by the time he retired in the early 1970s. The buses are now owned by Durham Transportation.
"He was a strong businessman, that's the best way to describe him," said his son Jim Ellison of Roseburg. "He was an entrepreneur. He was a self-motivator with a class-A personality."
Both his wife and his children said Luther Ellison had few hobbies. He liked to travel and he enjoyed flying his airplane across the country. Work, however, was his biggest passion. Even after he officially retired, he still herded sheep until his 80s, and he kept an office in Roseburg to handle real estate matters.
"He would go to the office every morning and stay there until the afternoon," Rose Ellison said. "I'm sure he didn't have much work to do, but he kept himself occupied, and he liked chatting with people who came to visit."
Jerry O'Brien, Luther's stepson, had spent many years working for the Ellison Transportation Co. Saying he was treated like everyone else, O'Brien described Luther as a fair boss, one who paid his employees well and who treated everyone with respect. Because of his amiable nature, Jerry said few people ever tried finding another job. There was no need.
"He never really got mad at anyone," O'Brien said. "He'd scowl sometimes, but he'd walk away with a grin on his face."
His daughter, Muriel Butler of Central Point, agrees her father was likable, the type of person always willing to lend a hand. Consistently putting other people's needs before his own, Butler said her dad was known and respected by many.
"If anybody needed help, he was right there," she said. "At the picnic, so many people came up to me and told me my dad was the best employer they ever had. That's just the way he was. He liked to help people."
Hoping Luther Ellison will be remembered for his business savvy and his generosity, Rose Ellison said her husband touched many lives in the past 90 years -- including her own.
"He cared for his family and for all of the little ones who came along," she said. "He was a gentle, caring man."

  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Wilma J. Ferguson
FERGUSON, Wilma J. – Age 85, passed away on Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Rose Haven Nursing Center in Roseburg, Oregon. She was born on September 10, 1918, in Wilbur, Oregon, to Myrtle and Elmer Ellison. She was one of four children. Wilma went to school at Days Creek, Oregon, where she was quite a baseball player in her high school days. She had fond memories of her school days and carried many friendships throughout her life from that area. On July 2, 1937, she married Bruce Ferguson and they spent their honeymoon and that summer on Diamond Rock Lookout. In 1938 they were on Abbott Butte Lookout. Bruce was employed with the USFS and they later settled at the Tiller Ranger Station. During that time Wilma helped at the Ranger Station switchboard receiving aircraft observer's reports from the lookout towers and relaying them to the Filter Station in Roseburg. She lived in Oregon City with her sister and family while Bruce served in the Army. They then returned to the Tiller Ranger Station. Their children Jerry, Kay, and Bob were born during their stay there. Wilma and her family moved in 1949 to Canyonville, Oregon, when Bruce became the Assistant District Fire Warden for Douglas Forest Protective Association. At times Wilma worked in the cook house or was a dispatcher for DFPA. She also worked as a school library aide in Canyonville, and Myrtle Creek. When Bruce retired in 1978 they bought a home in Myrtle Creek, Oregon, and stayed there for the remainder of their lives. Wilma enjoyed participating in garden club activities, card parties, and bingo. Her true source of enjoyment were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She never tired of their visits and always had the cookie jar full. She was Grandma to many and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She now rests in peace with her beloved Bruce. Wilma was preceded in death by her baby, Jerry; her parents; husband, Bruce; brother, Bill; and two sisters, Reba and Kathlyn. Survivors include a daughter, Kay Bourns of Kalispell, Montana; son, Bob Ferguson of Santa Rosa, California; grandchildren, Rick Bourns and his wife, Kerry of Windsor, California; Rob Bourns of Sebastopol, California; Signe Leming and her husband, Greg of Medford, Oregon; Nikki Ferguson of Eugene, Oregon; Chris Ferguson and his wife, Heather of Eugene; Matt Kane of Arizona; great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Hannah, and Cale Leming of Medford; Riley and Chelsea Ferguson of Eugene; extended family members, the Bill Leming’s; the Don Wilsey’s; the Bob Brown’s; and Val Kao.
