Douglas Co Pioneer V. 2 p 28 on 8 September 1883 at Roseburg, Douglas County, Oregon.
  • (Witness) History: He witnessed Charles Rice Killed at Mt. Scott Sunday
Sunday evening about 5:30 news came to town that on the baseball grounds at Mt. Scott, Sunday afternoon, James Dixon, a young man about 17 years of age, had shot and killed Charles Rice, a young man about 23 years of age.
Owen Atterbury, a constable of that precinct, was present and saw the shooting and immediately arrested young Dixon without a warrant and brought him to town last night, and he is still in Mr. Atterbury's charge.
From Mr. Atterbury, who witnessed the shooting, we learn that these two young men had had difficulty before this, and a small provocation, it seems, revived the old feud. It appears that some misunderstanding concerning the ball game awakened old ill feelings and a few hot words were interchanged between them, when Rice was heard to say he would thresh Dixon, and immediately began to take off his coat, while threatening Dixon. At this Dixon drew his pistol from his pocket and shot Rice twice, killing him almost instantly. Owen Atterbury, the constable of Mt. Scott, who has had Dixon in charge, procurred a warrant this morning from Justice Hamlin and placed Dixon under arrest as provided by law.
This is another disagreeable affair in our county that is sure to be annoying to all parties involved and is deeply deplored by all good citizens. As this affair will be brought into court and tried according to the process of law the Plaindealer forbears making any comment, pro or con, with regard to justifiable or unjustifiable homicide, believing newspaper trials do not subserve any good purpose. We give the account of the affair as reported by the constable, Mr. Atterbury, who brought Dixon to the city last night, as before stated, and await the result as the courts shall dispose of it in due time.

  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Jackson Agee, An Old Pioneer, Takes Life with 38-Calibre Revolver
Suffering severely from an affection of the bladder and believing that a surgical operation would be necessary, caused J.K. Agee to take his life early Sunday morning, July 29, at the home of his son William, where he was spending the summer. He arose early in the morning and penciled the following note: "5:30 Sunday morning. Have given up all hopes of getting any better. My pains are too severe to stand longer. My bills are all paid. Jack Agee."
After dressing himself he went into the kitchen, secured a hand mirror and placing it on a chair, used it as an aid in directing the pistol to the side of his head as he was seated on the floor of his bedroom. The ball passed through his head, struck a bureau drawer, and bounded to the floor. The pistol was new and of 38 caliber. It was not known by his family that he possessed one. Mr. and Mrs. Guild of Portland, relatives of the family, were visitors at the home. Mrs. Guild was awakened by the pistol report, and asked her huisband if he heard it. He said he did but thought it was an automobile passing as he was used to such noises. The family arose and had breakfast and did not rouse Mr. Agee, thinking he was sleeping. A party of young people drove up in an auto to take with them Mrs. Annyce Agee to secure some kodak pictures of John Kelley's grave at the cemetery. The kodak was in the bedroom and when Miss Agee stepped in to get it the discovery of Mr. Agee lying dead on the floor was made about 8:30 o'clock.
Jackson Agee was born in Missouri April 20, 1846, and came with his parents to Oregon in 1852, starting on April 1 and reaching here Sept. 1 by ox team. He was the son of Isaac Agee, and his parents are buried in Gopher valley. His home was in this county ever since arriving, except three years spent at Ashland. He retired from farming nine years ago, having sold a good ranch in Happy valley to Mr. Snyder.
Mr. Agee was the father of thirteen children, twelve of whom are living. His first wife died 37 years ago, and his second wife six years ago. His surviving children are Mrs. Serena Arthur of Portland, W.H. Agee of McMinnville. Mrs. Fred Howenstein and Mrs. James Welch of Aberdeen, Wash., Irvin Agee, Edward Agee and Mrs. A.L. Stow of Dallas, Elma Agee of Sheridan, Anna Agee of Cedar Rap of Sheridan, Calvin Agee of Napa, Cal., Loren Agee of Ashland, Anna Agee of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Oscar Agee of Helenville, Mont. All were present at the funeral today except Oscar and Mrs. Welch. Funeral services were delayed for the arrival of Anna Agee from Cedar Rapids, who came yesterday morning. The funeral will be at the Macy parlors this (Friday) morning at 10, conducted by Rev. J.W. Jenkins with burial in Masonic Cemetery.

  • Obituary: An obituary appeared in the ILL AND DESPONDENT PIONEER KILLS HIMSELF
Jackson Agee, Aged 71, Shoots Himself Through Head with Revolver
McMinnville, Or., July 30.-Jackson Agee, 71 years old, one of Yamhill county's honored pioneers committed suicide by shooting himself through the head with a .38 caliber revolver at the home of his son, W.H. Agee, in this city early this morning.
Mr. Agee had been in very poor health of late and was soon to undergo an operation. From a note which he left it appears that he thought his illness incurable, and growing despondent, decided to end his suffering. W.H. Agee, the son, was away from home during the night and returned just as the body was discovered about 8:30 this morning. His wife and daughter, Annis, were sleeping upstairs, and Mr. and Mrs. John Guile, of Portland, were guests in the house, but none of them heard the report of the gun except Mrs. Guile.
The body was prostrate on the floor. One hand still clutched the revolver, and a mirror was propped up on a chair before the body. The bullet had penetrated the head from one temple to the other and struck against the dresser on the opposite side, bounding back toward the body. The note left read as follows: "5:30, I have given up all hopes of getting well, and my pains are too severe to stand any longer. My bills are all paid. Jack Agee"
Mr. Agee crossed the plains by ox team from Missouri with his parents in 1852, settling in Yamhill county, where he has resided ever since, with the exception of two or three years spent in Ashland, Or. In 1866 he married Macilla Dawning who also crossed the plains from Missouri. Six children survive from this union. After his first wife's death he married America Ann Baker of this county and to them were born seven children, only one of whom is dead.
Following are the children: Mrs. W.C. ARthur, Portland; W.H. Agee, McMinnville; Mrs. Fred Howenstine and Mrs. James Welch, Aberdeen, Wash; Mrs. Alfred Stow, Irvin and Edward Agee, of Dallas; Calvin Agee, Napa, Cal; Elmer, Sheridan, Or; Oscar of Missoula, Mont; Loran of Ashland, Or., and Miss Ann Agee, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

  • Obituary: An obituary appeared in the Pioneer Dies at Age Eighty-seven
One of the few remaining covered wagon days pioneers left in this part of the state was called by death last Sunday when Jasper Agee, age 87 years, passed to the great beyond.
This pioneer was 87 years, 3 months and 3 days old and had been bed ridden only for a few days when he died. Prior to his last illness he was able to go about the ranch home in the Gopher Valley district and enjoy life as much as many younger men.
When only an infant his parents brought him to the Oregon Territory over the pioneer trails in a covered wagon, and settled in the Gopher Valley where he has lived all his long life and watched the wilderness pass to the beautiful develped present.
The deceased parent's settled in that valley where they filed on the homestead land on which the family has lived for many years.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Sheridan Funeral Home chapel and interment was in the Agee private cemetery in Gopher Valley.
The pioneer is survived by six children, George of the home ranch, Ann Griffith and Luella Murray of Camas, Washington, Clive of Craig Mount, Idaho, Walter of Umatilla, Clint of Wishram, Washington. There are also two brothers, Tom of Eugene, and Eugene of Gopher Valley. Seventeen grand children and 35 great grandchildren survive.
