Lloyd Delano Mecham

M, b. 26 March 1932, d. 21 November 2014
  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Lloyd Delano Mecham was born March 26, 1932 in Upalco, Utah, a town so small it was essentially a service point for the Utah Power and Light Company (UPALCO). Unfortunately, it was difficult to eke out a living there, so the family moved to Oregon and Northern California. Lloyd spent his formative years in the rough and tumble life of mill towns that cropped up in the region. It was there that he learned the finer points of rolling dice, although he abandoned this activity in his later years. Orphaned in his early years, Lloyd was fortunate to have been born into a loving family, with 8 older siblings who welcomed him into their homes. Lloyd spent his late teenage years working in mills in central Oregon, and learning the finer points of carpentry; a skill he put to many uses over the years, from building well-crafted furniture, to fully renovating the family home. Nobody could true a corner better than Lloyd. In early 1953, Lloyd was drafted into the Army Signal Corps. He received orders to serve in Korea, but that war ended just before he left, so he remained stateside. After the Army, Lloyd returned to Oregon to work in the timber industry. Which works out great for the rest of this story, because this is when he met the love of his life, feisty cowgirl Lois Stephenson. They married and settled in the company-owned town of Kinzua, Oregon where Lloyd worked as the head sawyer. This job was almost the death of him when a rogue log jumped the carriage and hit him full on. There was no ambulance, so he was loaded in the back of a station wagon and taken to the nearest hospital, 90 miles of winding roads over two mountain passes. It took 11 months to recover from the injuries, and he said that going back in the saw box felt like facing a monster, but once inside, it was back to normal. About a year after his recovery, the family moved to Emmett, Idaho when Lloyd took a job with Horseshoe Bend's Hoff Lumber Company (later Boise Cascade), where he sawed enough lumber to build 93,000 homes. Soon after retiring in 1995, Boise Cascade convinced him to oversee one of their mills in Mexico. It was there that Lloyd's reputation reached mythological status, because he was able to cut an enormous amount of lumber using a saw that was broken almost beyond repair. He and Lois regaled the family with many interesting stories of their time in Mexico. While raising their family in Emmett, Lloyd and Lois made many strong friendships that have endured for decades. Many of these friends introduced Lloyd and Lois to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; they became faithful members, and were joyfully sealed to each other and to their four children in the LDS Idaho Falls Temple. Lloyd's beloved cowgirl, Lois, preceded him in death in 2012; we, his children, take comfort in the thought that they are once again reunited. Considered by all to be a kind and quiet man, those who knew him best will also remember his sly sense of humor. Lloyd, being bald since his early 20s, was once asked if his father was also bald. Lloyd's response, "well, he was; but most people were unaware because he grew out his eyebrows and combed them back." He also shared his humor and love with his 11 grandchildren each of whom learned early that he always could be talked out of a tootsie roll or Tic Tac. Lloyd left this earth on 20 November 2014. Always a humble man, Lloyd felt there would be little to be said when he left this life. The truth, however, is that Lloyd exemplified a life well lived and leaves a far reaching legacy of inspiration. He was an honest and decent man, who believed in doing good unto others. Most importantly, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle, who will be a blessed memory for generations. Lloyd is survived by his son Duane (Mary Lou Soscia); and his daughters Darla, Deidre (Jay Heinrich) and Denise (Greg Himes) and his eleven grandchildren: Christian Mecham, Vincent Heinrich, Danielle Mecham, Mackenzie Healey (Kevin), Gage Heinrich, Cyrus Ariavand, Madison Heinrich, Claire Ariavand, Nikolas Himes, Zoie Himes and Molly Mecham, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the LDS Stake Center in Emmett. Burial will take place at a later date at the West Branch Cemetery in Mitchell, Oregon. after 21 November 2014.
