Willard Bryce "Bryce""Bill" Helms

M, b. 27 June 1919
  • Biography*: Willard Bryce "Bryce""Bill" Helms WILLARD BRYCE HELMS

Named Willard Bryce at birth, Cottage Grove, Oregon, June 27, 1919, I’m called Bryce by relatives and Oregon friends; known as “Bill” elsewhere. The other three children of Autia Wilson (1895-1961) and Goldie Mona (Goff) Helms (1898-1980) are: Roberta June (6/16) married to CPO John Homick (USN-Ret), Imperial Beach, CA; Glenn Willis (10/20) and Raymond Norton (12/22), both living in Prineville.
Much of this account is neither accurate nor complete but, rather, nostalgic reminiscences of incidents in Wheeler County, where most of my growing-up was done. An environment both simple and wholesome, it could also be harsh: e.g., a 4 1/2-mile winter walk to West Branch’s one-room schoolhouse to classes taught by Abbie Woodward.
Almost nomadic, seeking work, we moved a lot in Oregon, returning often to live in a multitude of homes in and around Mitchell. In a camp near Dad’s work at Ludwig’s sawmill (20’s), I recall Gage’s rampaging bull toppling our campstove but sparing the tent in which we huddled fearfully, stifling “whooping coughs” in pillows. On the Davenport place across Bridge Creek from Painted Hills and near Carroll Cemetery (where Dad and Mother now lie), we caught sage rats, relished Mom’s golden-hued ground-cherry preserves and visited the Ned Nortons on Bear Creek, while Dad irrigated for Ben Taylor.
As the ‘30’s began, we moved back from Portland, belongings piled tall in an old high-wheeled, open-air Dodge touring car. Later, on John Boyd’s timbered ranch, Mom’s elderberry dumplings and venison mincemeat quelled the hunger worked-up cutting wood and building a log cabin; Dad’s home brew was a rare treat when mistaken for root beer cooling the same creek.
From other West Branch homes, I spent summers riding the forest grazing range with Bill Masterson, a durable sourdough biscuit with venison backstrap in each hip pocket for lunch. At Gable Creek’s Wright place, Mom’s “light bread” and chokecherry jelly, followed by gooseberry pie really hit the spot after shocking hay or rolling tires down White Butte.
About my 8th grade, Dad became Mitchell’s Marshal; I treasured trips with him on Watermaster duties. Pumping gas for Cliff Campbell, dismantling cars for Ray Jones and tending chickens for Baxter Payne filled my after school hours. Summers, I herded sheep or hayed. Other memories of Mitchell days include: Learning harmonica in Mr. Rinehart’s class; operating Cascadian Sound Service Movies; and my revolver failing to fire in a western school play.
Mitchell territory youngsters often contrived their own amusements. Some benign, like “weenie” roasts atop Mitchell Rock and “moto-crossing” balloon-tired bikes over hummocks in Lafe Jones’ pasture; Others were more mischievous, according to “wild tales” of a cow “attending” the old stone school, Halloween toppling of outhouses and a “tractionless” Model T, propped aloft on blocks of wood.
Moving to The Dalles 9/36, we all contributed to the family’s support; Mother pitting cherries and cleaning homes while we boys pitched in as store stock-boy, mowing lawns, picking fruit and delivering papers. I graduated from high school there in 1938 to jobs at: (old) Arlington-Hotel Welcom; Dufur-wheat ranch; Mitchell Hotel-until burned; Boyd-grain elevator; Bear Creek-cinnabar mining; and in 1940, Prineville-Alexander-Yawkey Planer mill.
With Pearl Harbor, my flying in Redmond’s Civilian Pilot Training Program halted. My brothers immediately joined the Navy; I chose Aviation Cadet training in California, graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant 2/6/43. Following instruction in DC-3’s with TWA, I reported 6/43 to the CBI theater, flying C-46’s over the “Hump” to China and C-47’s on Burma missions, until rotation Stateside 3/45. Initially ferrying various aircraft; then Engineering Officer of a Light Bomber Squadron (A-26, B-45). I entered electrical engineering study at Ohio State University 9/49.
While in school, I met Jessie Martha Skaleski of East Liverpool, OH, daughter of Ukranian immigrants Peter and Martha. We were married 3/31/51 in the Wright-Patterson AF Base, Ohio, chapel. Our marriage was blessed with four daughters, all living in California: Sister Mary, O.P. (Dominican Order), a Registered Nurse in Villa Sienna Rest Home, Mt. View; Theresa, also an R.N., at Memorial Hospital, Santa Rosa; Patricia (Patti), wife of Deputy Sheriff Keith Farley and mother of Christine and Julie, Yucca Valley; Catherine (Cathy), a student at Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park.
Graduation from the USAF Institute of Technology (M.S.E.E.--Electronics) 8/52, launched two decades of varied assignments in Research and Development management, with continued flying in T-33’s, often on business. These assignments took our family to stations in Ohio, Maryland, New Mexico, Massachusetts, Colorado and, finally, California. Air Force retirement came 5/1/72, after 30 years and final duty in space technology. With retirement, membership in Toastmasters (Club Past-President) and several technical societies lapsed; those continuing are Air Force Hump Pilot, and Retired Officer Associations, and the Knights of Columbus.
I taught mathematics in local high schools (1972-1980); Part-time activity in real estate sales has given way to a full-time retirement filled with varied interests. Jessie and I stay involved in church, community and senior citizens activities; I do a bit of writing, including editing and distributing a monthly Homeowners Association Newsletter and helping publish a Seniors Club Bulletin. She’s treasurer for several organizations.
Now 12-year residents of the Aegean Hills section of Mission Viejo, California (minutes from Disneyland), we’ve watched homes supplant orange groves, but, it’s still a good base for our most enjoyable pursuit; exploring our continent, via trailer, seeing new places and faces and visiting old friends and family. Unit officers in Orange County’s Wally Byam Caravan Club, we’ll be at our International Rally in Duluth, MN during the summer, ‘83, and at the reunion of former students of Mitchell’s now-charred stone school. However, God willing, there’ll be other trips to relive memories in “the old stompin’ ground”-- and we’re looking forward to them.
