  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the This is from an obituary for John W. Gilliam. He died at his home on Fall Creek, Hood County, Texas, on April 26, 1918. He was born in Jackson County, Missouri, on July 24, 1830 (possibly 1831 as shown in the above family bible) and the family moved to Texas in 184. He enlisted in the Confederate Army but he was returned to Grayson County to operate a mill for the government. He moved to Hood County in 1880 and lived there until his death. He became a Christian early in life. He first united with the Protestant Methodist Church. During the Civil War, he joined the Missionary Baptist Church and remained in that church until he was called away. He was a deacon in this church for 40 years. He was married to Sarah Anne Cox on 30 January 1851. They had five children of whom John E. Gilliam of Fall Creek and Mrs. Josephine Smith of Damon, Texas survive him. Sarah died on 18 February 1864 and he married Phebe Susan Walthall on 16 March 1865. Six children were born to them. He second wife died 8 May 1874 and he married a third time to Mary Jane Haywood on 30 August 1875. They had eight children. Mary Jane survives. John W. Gilliam was buried in the Fall Creek Cemetery with Masonic honors.

    Dallas, Or., Nov. 25 - Mrs. Sarah Brown died at her home, near Falls City, in this county, November 23. She was born in Clay county, Missouri, February 10, 1832, and crossed the plains with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Nichols, in 1844. Her mother was a sister to General Cornelius Graham [Gilliam], who was killed at Wlls Springs, in the Cayuse Indian war, in 1848.
    Mrs. Nichols was married to Adam Brown in this county December 19, 1847, and they lived continuously on their donation claim, except one year spent in Eastern WAshington. Mrs. Brown died surrounded by her husband and seven children. These children are: John J. Brown, of Oakland, Or; Elizabeth Gage, Josephine Frink, William A. Brown, Eliza R. Brown, Christina Brown and Henrietta Robertson, all of Falls City, in Polk county.
    The funeral was from the family residence, and the burial in the cemetery near Dallas.
    Mrs. Brown's sister, Mrs. Louise N. McDowell, of Toledo, Lincoln county, is the only surviving member of the pioneer family of John Nichols.

    OBITUARY
    Departed this life January 4, 1875, America Harris, wife of Henry T. Harris, residing five miles south of Dallas, Polk County, Oregon. Deceased, a daughter of John and Nancy Nichols, was born October 20, 1840. She was married to her now bereaved husband July 12, 1854. In 1866, with her husband and family, removed to Santa Clara Valley, Santa Barbara County, California. Being discouraged with severe drouths with which that country was visited, returned to Polk County, Oregon, in the Fall of 1872, where they remained until she was summoned away by death. She professed religion in 1854, lived in the fear and love of God, and when the Master called for her she was ready to go and be with Jesus. She leaves a husband and children with a large connection, besides numerous friends to mourn her loss.
    Died Jan. 13, 1875, America J. Infant daughter of H.T. and America Harris, aged 12 days old. The mother only crossed the river a little in advance of her darling babe. "Parents and children there will meet, Will meet to part no more."
