Mrs. J.R. Means, Sr., died in Pendleton Tuesday evening.
Mrs. J.R. Means, S., died at 7:45 o'clock Tuesday evening, December 18, from a general physical collapse, incident to old age. She had been a sufferer from sickness and had not known a well day in 30 years. The end came at the home of her son Thomas J. Means, corner of Alta and Coebie streets, many relatives being at her bedside. She had been in a comatose condition during the preceding 24 hours and never regained consciousness so as to recognize those who were in attendance in her closing hours.
The funeral will occur at 1 o'clock on Thursday afternoon from the M.E. church, south, where services will be conducted by the pastor, Rev. W.B. Gray.
Rebecca Branstetter, the subject of this sketch, was born at Nashville, Tenn., on September 25, 1828, and was wedded in Virginia in 1848 to Jesse Yoakum. Of that union three children are alive, as follows Mary, now Mrs. John M. Bentley, of Pendleton; Alice, now Mrs. A.S. Wells, of Heppner; Rev. D.W. Yoakum, of Express, Baker county. Mr. and Mrs. Yoakum removed to Missouri and the former was killed in 1854, while crossing the plains with a band of cattle belonging to himself and his brother Isaac, on their way to California. Mr. Yoakum was shot by his night-herder, by whom he was mistaken for an Indian, at Thousand Springs.
Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Means were united in marriage in Ray county, Missouri, in 1857 and together they removed to Umatilla county in 1863, and settled at Nolin, where they resided until March 7, 1878, when they came to Pendleton, where they have ever since resided. The husband, J.R. Means, Sr., and four children still live, as follows: Mrs. S.A. Tweedy, of Waitsburg; Henry C. and J.R. Means, Jr., of Umatilla; Thomas J. Means, of Pendleton.
Mrs. S.A. Tweedy, of Waitsburg, Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Means and J.R. Means, of Umatilla, have been in attendance for several days. Mrs. Wells, of Heppner, started for Pendlton on Tuesday but was seized with a fainting spell so that it was thought she was going to die, and had to remain at home to recuperate. She is expected to arrive Thursday morning. Rev. D.W. Yoakum, of Express, was here for a few days last week, and was notified by telephone last night of the fatal termination of his mother's illness. He is expected to arrive on tonight or tomorrow morning's train.
The news of the death of Mrs. Means will be received with regret by a large circle of friends, whom she had gained by long life during the stirring early days of the county, and her departure will accentuate the fact that the pioneers are rapidly moving over to join the great majority.
