  John graduated from John R. Rogers in 1938. He was a member of the National Honor Society and competed in football, hockey and swimming. John graduated from Washington State University where he received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1942. John was a multi-talented athlete, excelling in football, wrestling, baseball, hockey and swimming. At WSU, he was President of his dormitory, President of the Student Senate Club and led the campus War Bond Committee. After graduation, John was assigned to the U.S.’s World War II secret project to develop jet engines. Near the end of the war, he enrolled in Engineering Management courses at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. John was a member of many service and professional organizations in Walla Walla including: a 50-year member of the Masonic Blue Mountain Lodge 13, F and AM; a 32nd degree Scottish Rite and 50 year member of Freemasonry, Valley of Walla Walla; a member of the El Katif Shrine Temple in Spokane (where he was very active in fund-raising for the Children’s Hospital) and Past President of the Shrine Club in Walla Walla. His service in Rotary International was extensive and included being: a Paul Harris Fellow; a Don Sherwood Fellow; and in 1996, a Rotarian of Merit. As an automobile dealer, John was awarded Time Magazine’s Dealer-of-the-Year for Washington State. He served on the Board of Trustees for the Washington State Auto Dealers Insurance Trust and the Northwest Ford Dealers Advertising Association Board of Directors. John received a merit award from the National Highway Users Federation for Driver Training program support. He took pride in donating the vehicles necessary for driver’s training and auto mechanics at the local area high schools. He was a member of the Walla Walla Downtown Development Association, Blue Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America, United Way, Elks BPOE 287, Walla Walla Jaycee’s, YMCA and YWCA, and the Director of the Chamber of Commerce. John was also a Board member of the First Congregational Church and the Fort Walla Walla Museum.
  He was a long-time Walla Walla High School and WSU Booster Club member and sponsored 4-H and FFA events annually. John was a wonderful husband, honored and patient father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and a cherished friend to many.
