- Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the "McDowell dies at Burnt Woods"
Funeral service to be in Corvallis Monday morning, with burial at Dallas, Or. James Benjamin McDowell, late of Burnt Woods, who was born in the fort at Grand Ronde, died at 5 o'clock this morning at Philomath where he had been cared for at the home of relatives. He had been ill for some time. Mr. McDowell was a brother of Mrs. Sarah Jane Jones, late of Burnt Woods, whose death occurred only a month ago. Mr. McDowell was born October 11, 1864, at the old Grand Ronde fort during the time of the civil war. Apparently Mr McDowell's parents, John and Louisa McDowell were there with other settlers for protection from invading foe, although members of the family have no present record of events of that time. Mr. McDowell is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Laura Akers of Portland, and Mrs. Dora Chamberlain of Longview, Wa; one brother, Charles McDowell of McTimmons Valley, Oregon; three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Guthrie, Dallas, Mrs. Etta Hoef of Burnt Woods, and Mrs. Mary McVay, Hollywood, Cal., with nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A retired farmer, Mr. McDowell had resided at Burnt Woods for the past six years. He was a charter member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge at Falls City, and members of that order are to have charge of the graveside service to be held at the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Dallas. The funeral service will be at 10 o'clock Monday morning in the drawing room of the Hollingsworth funeral home, with Rev Morris Goodrich of Philomath officiating. The remains will then be taken to Dallas for interment, the commital service to be held there Monday afternoon.
From newspaper, probably in Polk or Benton County, Oregon.
