  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the THORNTON, Loyd Dalton-- Age 76, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away on Friday March 26, 2004. He was born on May 27, 1927, at an aunt's house near the Sutherlin East Elementary School to Carl and Pearl (Pepiot) Thornton. On February 8, 1947, in Roseburg, Oregon, he was married to his life long love, Betty J. Witcher. He lived his entire life in the Sutherlin and Oakland, Oregon area. His first job, at the age of ten, was for some Weyerhauser Timber Company cruisers working on the upper Calapooia watershed. He stayed at their camp that was eight miles fromthe nearest home, while they went out for the July 4th week. He worked for several other timber companies as he was growing up in the HinkleCreek area until he entered the Navy in 1945. He was also a member ofthe Oregon Guard during 1943 to 1945. On May 1, 1947, he started workfor the Douglas Forest Protective Association as a Fire Warden at theHinkle Creek Guard Station east of Sutherlin. He worked for the DFPA until 1957 when he accepted a job with the Oregon Department ofForestry as a Forest Inspector, which in later years became known as a Forest Practices Forester. He retired on May 31, 1985, after 38 yearsof service to forest fire protection and common sense forest stewardship. His life was very active and he believed very much in the community and in the youth of the area. He was very active in numerous community activities, but never forgot his family. He was one of the first Hunter Safety Instructors, teaching firearm safety to hundreds of local youth over the years. He was a 4-H leader, FFA advisor,member on the Fair Oaks Grange, as well as Master for several years,Board Member on the Fair Oaks Fire Department, Board Member on theOakland School District during the 60's and 70's. He was instrumental in the construction of the current Oakland Elementary School. He was amember and Chairman of the Fair Oaks Cemetery Assoc., Member of theMildred Kanipe Park Advisory Committee, and served for years on theCalapooia PAC Committee for the Planning Department, life member ofthe North American Hunting Club, and the National Rifle Association.He always put his family first and his grandchildren were very specialto him. He especially enjoyed hunting with his family, many timesleaving in the middle of the night to travel to Eastern Oregon. He also enjoyed fishing, especially salmon, picking blackberries forneighbors and family, travels in the mountains, and visiting witheveryone. His wife, Betty preceded him in 1993. He is survived by his children, Amalie Doke (Darrell); Maxine Fugate (Tom); Melvin Thornton(Debbie); and Julie Lee (Richie); grandchildren, Jason; Michele; Darrell Jr; Randy; Kennette; Kimberly; Andy; Shawnee; Joe; Jeremiah; Jared; Stacy; Rory; Jill; and 21 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Larry Thornton and sisters, Florence Langenberg, Norma Wimberly, and Vita Pruitt. He is also preceded indeath by his mother and father, Carl and Pearl Thornton; brothers, Boyd Thornton and Leo Thornton. The family asks that any donations bemade to the Fair Oaks Cemetery Association at 4497 Nonpariel Road,Sutherlin, Oregon 97479. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00p.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Chapel of the Firs, 881 W. SixthAve. Sutherlin, Oregon. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 p.m.Burial will be at the Fair Oaks Cemetery followed with a potluck lunchand celebration of his life at the Fair Oaks Grange Hall.
