  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the June 5, 1919 - Oct. 6, 2011 Louise passed away peacefully in Redmond, Oregon on October 6, 2011, at the age of 92. She was born June 5, 1919, in Cottage Grove, Oregon, to Walter and Mabel (Miller) Hodge. She graduated from The Dalles, Oregon, High School in 1937, and Oregon State University in 1941, with a degree in Education. During World War II she worked for the US Forest Service with special focus on incendiary balloons launched by the Japanese headed toward the west coast of the United States. After the war she taught school in the Redmond School District. In 1962, Louise and Leonard opened Downs Sales and Service, an International Harvester truck dealership and in 1973 they opened what is now Redmond Grocery Outlet in the same location. Louise married Leonard Downs on February 14, 1942, in Madras, Oregon, and was married for 57 years until his passing. In earlier years she loved playing tennis and was City of Redmond ladies champion. She also loved hiking, bowling, fishing and picking mountain huckleberries. Louise loved visiting with friends and family especially about her grand children whom she adored. She was involved with the Redmond Jaycees and Redmond Potato Festival committee. Louise was very active in the Redmond Chapter of PEO, Juniper Literary Society and The Community Presbyterian Church. Louise is survived by her two children, daughter, Jan Downs of Cedar Park, Texas; and son, Bob (Carol) Downs of Terrebonne, Oregon; grandchildren, Shannon (Dale) Shumaker of Austin, Texas, Kevin (Shelley) Brattian of Phoenix, Arizona, Brian and Vince (JoHanna) Downs, of Redmond, Oregon; great-grandchildren, Kayleigh and Alyssa Shumaker and Bo Downs; brothers, Kenneth Hodge of Vancouver, Washington and Doctor Wallace (Geraldine) Hodge of Portland, Oregon; and many nieces and nephews. Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; her parents; and her sister, Dorothy Hodge McFadden. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, October 14, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., at Community Presbyterian in Redmond, OR. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution on behalf of Louise may do so to The Redmond Community Presbyterian Church, Redmond/Sisters Hospice or the charity of your choice. on Tuesday, 11 October 2011 Bend, Deschutes County, Oregon.
