  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Longtime Newberg resdient Emma Mae Hamner died Dec. 7, 2004, in Condon. She was 88. She was born Sept. 28, 1916, to Ulwin and Ada (Dozier) Denyer in Portland. She grew up on the family farm near Turner except for the few years in the mid-1920s when the family lived on "peanut hill" in Cashmere, Wash. In 1934 she graduated from Turner High School, where she had played on the girl's basketball team. She majored in home economics and education at Oregon State College (now Oregon State University), graduating with honors in 1938. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and other national scholastic honoraries. She met her husband, Leonard Allen Hamner, at OSU when they lived in the same boarding house. She and her brother, Jim, lived in the attic and Leonard in the basement. They married Nov. 24, 1938. She worked at OSU for two years following her marriage. In 1941 she and her husband purchased Graham Drug Store in Newberg. The store soon became Hamner Drug, and was sold in 1968. Her husband preceded her in death in 1981. She volunteered in many organizations during the more than 63 years she resided in Newberg. She was a Cub Scout den mother and a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader. She was active in the PTA and in the Central School carnivals. She served as mother advisor for the international Order of Rainbow Girls, Newberg Assembly No. 2. She was an active volunteer at the Newberg Public Library and a member of the Library's Friends organization, as well as the American Association of University Women and the Republican Women's group. She was active in the Order of Eastern Star as a committee member and an officer, serving twice as Worthy Matron for Newberg Chapter No. 55. In addition, she served at the state level as the Grand Representative to New Mexico. She was active in other Masonic organizations, including Amaranth. She was a past president of Chapter L of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Newberg. Survivors include: son Louis of Condon; daughter Lois Holmes of Redmond; granddaughters, Annette Martinez and Kimberly Ositis; great-grandchildren, Gabriella and Hannah Martinez and Nicholas and Natalie Ositis; five nieces and one nephew. She was preceded in death by brothers, James and Russell Denyer. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 18 at First United Methodist Church in Newberg. Committal is private at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.
