Wilburn Henry "Bud" Andrew

M, b. 28 November 1923, d. 16 February 2020
  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Wilburn Henry "Bud" Andrew was born Nov 28, 1923 at Rupert, Idaho. He was the second of three sons born to William Marian "Bill" Andrew Sr and Anna Mae LONG Andrew; William Marian "Bill" Jr, Bud, and Ralph. Their father died in 1926 of Rocky Mountain Spotted fever. His widowed mom married George H. Kenaston in 1929 and the family moved to Shoshone, Idaho in 1936. Three more children; George Warren (Casey), Clair, and Judy were added to the blended family. Bud excelled in math and the sciences. He played in the Shoshone High School band, and was quite good at tennis. He also enjoyed rabbit hunting and fishing. The April 1940 federal census listed him as age 16, 1st year of HS. Occupation: Newsboy. Bud graduated from Shoshone High School in 1942, and was drafted Jan. 21, 1943. He reported for duty at Fort Douglas, Utah. Bud took a test to get into the Army Air Corps and was transferred to the Nashville Army Air Center at Nashville, Tennessee for further testing. After graduation from flight school Bud was assigned to 98th Troop Carrier Squadron. On the 14th of June 1944, Bud arrived in England, missing the D-Day Invasion at Normandy by 8 days. In August, 1944, Hitler ordered Operation Luttich which was an attack against Mortain, France by German panzer divisions in an attempt to drive American troops back from the area south of Normandy. The Germans surrounded some American troops that were on top of a big hill near Mortain. Those troops were calling in American artillery fire and air attacks against the Germans, but they were running short of ammunition and supplies. One of Bud's first missions was flying out of England to provide ammunition and supplies to those encircled troops on top of that hill. Bud's squadron then moved to Reims, France, which is 80 miles east-northeast of Paris. Later, the squadron moved to Orleans, France which is in north-central France about 69 miles southwest of Paris. Bud's squadron stayed at Orleans until after the end of the war. Bud flew countless numbers of resupply or ferrying wounded missions in France, but only a total of 13 combat missions where he was actually fired on by the Germans. He flew on the mission Aug. 10,1944 to drop supplies and ammunition to troops surrounded on a hill at Mortain; dropped troops behind enemy lines to open the second front in Holland; towed gliders loaded with gasoline for tank crews surrounded in the town of Bastogne; and dropped paratroopers crossing the Rhine River. One mission he remembered in particular was Dec.26, 1944 when they towed gliders into Bastogne, Belgium (Battle of the Bulge). This was the only time the aircraft ever got hit by enemy fire. He only got a small bullet hole in the tail of the plane, although they saw several tracers coming at his plane and kept gaining altitude as the tracers passed under the plane. The war in Europe ended May 8, 1945. Then all they had to do was ferry wounded and supplies and wonder whether they would be going back to the good old USA, or be shipped to the Pacific to take part in the war with Japan. Finally, in August 1945 the 98th squadron was ordered to return to the US. Just before Bud was sent to Europe in 1944, he married Vivian Lorraine Claycomb, a girl from Jerome Idaho. Their marriage was blessed with two children: Bill Andrew and Pam Andrew Stowe. After the war, Bud and his little family returned to Shoshone where he worked at the bank for several years before moving to California. He enrolled at UCLA and earned a degree in mechanical engineering in June 1953. Over the following 35 years he worked at jobs in California and Idaho retiring on Nov. 30, 1988. Bud had always loved fishing so he returned to his roots in Shoshone in 1997 where he built a comfortable home next to the Little Wood River. Besides fishing, Bud enjoyed oil painting, writing comical poetry, gardening, cooking, working on World War II airplane models, and family history. In his younger years he had been a boy scout leader. Bud passed away quite suddenly Sunday morning, Feb 16, 2020. He had recently moved from his son Bill & daughter -in-law Brenna's home in Idaho to be near his daughter Pam in Provo, Utah. He was planning to go out for breakfast with Pam when he began to struggle for breath. Pam called for help, but the paramedics were unable to get a pulse. They suspect he had a heart attack. Bud was proceeded in death by his father, Bill Andrew Sr, his step-father, Geo H. Kenaston, his mother, Anna Mae LONG Kenaston, his brothers Bill and Ralph, wife Vivian of 52 years, and long time friend, Anne Lowe. Bud will be buried in Shoshone near his mom and step-father, and eldest brother Bill. He is survived by his son Bill & Brenna Andrew of Gooding, Idaho and daughter Pam Andrew Stowe & her husband Dan Stowe of Provo, Utah, seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, his brother Casey Kenaston of Faifax Station, Virginia, brother Clair H. Kenaston of Santa Rosa, California, and sister, Judy Kenaston Warren of Ellicott City, MD
