Mildred Ellen Guthrie Boyer of Dallas died Oct. 19 in Salem. She was 89.
She was born in Dallas to Samuel "Elmer" and Jennie Gilson Guthrie. She was a descendant of David M. Guthrie who drove a wagon to Oregon in 1846 at the age of eighteen along what is now known as the Applegate Trail.
She grew up on the Guthrie farm and attended Guthrie School then lived in Salem where she attended Leslie and the old Salem High School. She later attended Oregon Normal School in Monmouth.
She lived on the Morrow Ranch in Dallas and spent time living in Coos Bay, Florence, Washington, California, and Falls City, returning to Dallas in 1990.
She had lived at Heceta Head Lighthouse from 1949 to 1958 where her husband John was the officer in charge. She worked in nursing and as a dental assistant for Doctors McCallum, Starbuck and Bossatti in Dallas.
She was involved in community service groups and enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting. She volunteered as a camp host in the Deschutes National forest for many years. She always grew a large garden and shared the harvest with the neighborhood.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Flavia Stepper-Baker and a granddaughter, Pamela Stepper-Slaughter.
Survivors include her sons, Ray Cooper of Dallas and Pat Cooper of Beaver; daughter, Mickie Stephens of Salem; grandchildren, Rick Stepper of Salem, Tim Stepper of Dallas, Beckie Noel of Las Vegas, Mark Dimbat of Salem, Pat Cooper Jr. of Reedsport, and Tonya Johnson of Bend; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 at Bollman Funeral Home in Dallas and internment will follow at Dallas Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to any animal or wildlife charity or to any veterans organization.
