A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2003 at Rogue River Cemetery for Betty M. Thomas, who died on April 3 at the age of 81. A reception will be held at the Gold Beach Resort Convention Center following the service.
Betty (Turner) Thomas was born December 21, 1921 in Gold Beach to Jasper H. "Jap" Turner and Clara Belle Prince Turner. She attended school in Gold Beach. She married Howard L. Thomas in October of 1939. They spent most of their married years living on Hunters Creek. Howard preceded her in death in 1997. Betty lived the last 50 years of her life in a home built on the original Turner ranch, on Hunters Creek where she was raised.
Betty's great-grandfather, Walter Sutton, came across the Oregon Trail by covered wagon in 1854 at the age of five. He came to Port Orford by horseback in 1875, where he married Louisa Schmidt there in 1877. He published a newspaper there, and they later moved the newspaper to Gold Beach. Their daughter, also called Louisa, married Betty's grandfather, Jesse Turner. They bought the ranch at Hunters Creek and raised their family there. Betty's father, Jap Turner, later bought the ranch from his father. The site of the Rogue River Cemetery was part of the original Turner ranch, and so it is fitting that Betty will be buried on the ranch where she was raised.
After her children were in school, Betty worked cleaning motel units for Leith Auto Court. Later she was a grocery clerk for many years, first for Homer and Gladys Taylor at Taylor's Market, which later became Chris' Market, and for many years for McKay's Market when it was in the building now occupied by Interior Coverups. She was the bookkeeper for her brother Bill Turner's Standard Oil business for many years before she retired. After Howard retired from logging, the two spent several years camping and fire watching during the summers for Zuber Logging Co. Betty enjoyed playing cards, knitting, camping, and drinking beer with family and friends. She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, and the Brookings Emblem Club.
Survivors include her daughter, Darlene and husband Tom McCarthy; sons, Jerry and wife Rose Thomas, and Don and wife Bea Thomas; brother Bill and wife Doris Turner, aunt Berniece Turner, sister-in-law Helen Thomas, twelve grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and her life-long friend, Elaine Crose.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, her parents, and a grandson, Jeffrey Thomas.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Curry Historical Society.
