After our business adjourned the president introduced our speaker Bart Littlefield who is again living in our area after retirement and living here as a child attending Newberg schools. He is the grandson of Dr. Hobart Littlefield and says he is the last to carry the name as the other descendants were his great aunts Hazel Davidson and Lelia Eldreidge of St. Paul area. His grandmother was Maggie Nelson Littlefield and he remembers well the big home at 401 N Howard where they entertained many interesting guests. Bart has retired as a "detail man" for McKesson Drug Co so the family was-still medically connected. His three daughters are all nurses. Several generations of Littlefield's were doctors, dentists or pharmacists. Several members of CVH were brought into the world by Dr. Harry Littlefield, with Ruby Brisbine and Clifton Parrett being present. The line of doctors dates back to 1833. Bart and his wife are glad to be living in Newberg and we hope to hear more from them as they become members of our group. He donated many pictures and medical books to be added to our files at Newberg Library. Many events were of interest to us. His mother attended Geo Fox College with Herbert Hoover. The doctor calls were made with horse and buggy.
At the passing of his grandmother Maggie Littlefield (1977 I think) his family driving from Medford were kidnapped by two filipinos who escaped from prison and that story made national headlines. We were shown newspaper clippings and true story magazines of the event that took place near Corvallis. They wanted his car to get away in a rush but his wife refused to leave their young daughters and says he owes his life to her presistence.
His mother was an accomplished musician and played piano for many radio entertainers and Bart sang with the radio programs for several years. He had a rare picture of a troop of Oregon Calvary in Mexico in 1916. Many pictures of Newberg citizens, NHS graduating class of 1914 of which some recognized names. Doris read a tribute written to Dr. Harry Littlefield given by an old Chinese man who lived in this area but had moved to Woodburn at Dr. Harry's funeral he and his little dog walked all the way from Woodburn arriving as the service started. He knelt at the casket and gave a very touching eulogy of faithfulness since Dr. Harry had befriended him in many ways. Walking the 20 miles was certainly a tribute to anyone in those days. In fact there were many Chinese who lived and worked for area farmers as well in Yamhill, Carlton, St. Paul and Newberg.
