Born March 31, 1886, at Grangeville, he graduated from Grangeville High School and took degrees at the University of Idaho and Columbia University, New York, N.Y. He headed the science department of the Academy of Idaho at Pocatello and was chosen acting president of the Idaho Technical Institute. He established the pharmacy department, which is now the College of Pharmacy of Idaho State University. A funeral mass was celebrated for him Wednesday in Boise.

    William A. Chandler, who lived in Portland for most of his 85 years, died Thursday in a Portland hospital of a heart attack.
    A funeral for Mr. Chandler will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Mt. Scott Funeral Home. Private entombment will be in Portland Memorial Mausoleum.
    Mr. Chandler was born June 10, 1906, in Kansas City, Mo. The family moved to Portland when he was 15 months old.
    He graduated from Simon Benson Polytechnic High School in 1924, and was a saw maker for R. Hoe Saw Co. for 46 years until his retirement in 1972.
    He married Marie Reznick in 1935.
    Mr. Chandler was a member of the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers Local Lodge 24. During World War II, he was an auxiliary fireman for the city of Portland and a member of the Multnomah County Civilian Defense Council.
    Survivors include his wife; brother, Leo of King City; and sisters, Vera Casper of Mar Bay, Calif., and Thelma Nelson of Portland.
    The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the American Heart Association.
