  • Note*: He The Story of the Cruelty of the Tories During the Revolution
William Thornton, my grandmother Toney's father was too young to go to war and had to help the women folks. He went to the pasture to get the cows. He was met by some Tory or English sympathizer and they beat him with pine knots and left him for dead. He revived and got home. My father, W.L. Toney said he saw him and his head was covered with scars which left bald spots. This same William Thornton, worked twenty-one (21) years in the first iron works in the United States. It was called The Red River Iron works was located in Kentucky. They beat the dross out of the iron with a large trip hammer, run by water power. They made kettles and pots, stoves were not invented at that time, about 1810.

  • Note: He Questionable: Relationship of Matthew Thornton
Matthew Thornton was the Great-Uncle of the James Toney heirs, being a brother to their grand-father's brother. After studying it over it seems reasonable for William Thornton was too young and their father was to old to be in the Army, so Matthew Thornton must have been 35 years old when he signed the Declaration of Independence and the Father 60 years old. Matthew was a representative from New Jersey, while South Carolina was the home of his father.
