In her early years she climbed Beacon Rock and Mars Hill in later years, Climbed to the lights atop the St. Johns Bridge and a Prayer Tower in Jerusalem, Cruised the Nile River and the Mississippi, Flew faster than sound on the Concorde and rode a gondola in Venice and a camel in Egypt. In her words "I am grateful for seeing and doing all that I have." Elsie was an active civic leader: member of the St. Johns Heritage Association for many years, a member of Rose Court #7 Order of the Amaranth, 4H leader for over 10 years, President of the St. Johns Study Club (was the last living member), Citizen of Dedication at the Portland Federation of women's clubs and was active in her neighborhood and animal shelters. Elsie was dearly loved by many and will be missed by all. Elsie is survived by her four children, Martin (Karol), David (Judy-Jo), Bradley and Rebecca; 9 Grandchildren, 16 Great-grandchildren and 3 Great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service to be held at Bateman Funeral Chapel in Newport, OR August 14, 2012 at 11:00AM. Arrangements are being handled locally by her grandson Brian Norris at Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes. after 2 August 2012 Oregon.

Perry Eugene NaSmythe, Sr. was born December 10, 1916 in Fairview, Oregon. Afterward the family lived in Washougal, WA for a time, and then they moved to N. Mears Street in St. Johns, Oregon. He attended George Elementary School and Roosevelt High School. Perry NaSmythe and Corinne Goodwin were married on March 30th, 1939 in Vancouver, Washington. She was 17 and he was 22 years old. For a time they lived in St. Johns, with Perry working in the shipyards as a crew foreman. Perry Jr. was born in 1940 and Sally was born in 1942. In 1945 he enlisted in the Army. He served his basic training at Camp Roberts in Paso Robles, California. Just before being sent to Japan, the war ended. He did go to Japan as part of the occupation forces.
After his discharge from the military, the family moved to Linnton, Oregon. Perry worked as a crew foreman (troubleshooter) at the Manufactured Gas Company which was later purchased by Northwest Natural Gas Company. For many years, he worked out of the stone building under the St. Johns Bridge.
In 1950 the NaSmythe family moved to a 20 acre farm in Scappoose, Oregon. Marguerette was born in 1951. They attended the Sunset Park Church of God in St. Helens, Oregon. In 1987 Perry and Corinne retired to Lincoln City where they lived until 1997 when they returned to Scappoose and took up residence in the Spring Lake Retirement Community. In March of 2009 they celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary, surrounded by family and friends.
Corinne passed away May 27th, 2009. In September Perry moved into the Creekside Village in Beaverton, where he lived until his death on May 19th, 2010.
He is survived by his son, Perry Eugene NaSmythe, Jr. and his wife Debby; daughters, Sally Weber and Marguerette Langsev and her husband Bob; and sister, Elsie Norris from St. Johns. Perry’s memorial service was held at Creekside Retirement Village in Beaverton on Sunday, May 23rd. Online condolences may be sent at www.ANewTradition.com.
