  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Asotin County Sentinel (Washington) December 21, 1934, pg. 1, part 1: Mrs. Tate, Pioneer Answers Last Call; Crossed Plains When Eleven Years Old—Lived in Four Counties, Never Moved
Mrs. Sarah E. Tate, aged eighty-three years, died last Friday morning, in Walla Walla at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. C. Campbell, following a period of several years that she had not enjoyed very robust health. Remains were brought to Asotin and funeral was he4ld in Merchant’s chapel in Asotin Monday afternoon, and burial was made in the Vineland cemetery where her late husband, Morgan H. Tate, was buried several years ago. Rev. S. E. Hornibrook, pastor of the Methodist church, preached the funeral service.

Mrs. Tate, whose maiden name was Sarah Edith Goble, was born in Springfield, Illinois, March 26, 1853. When a small child, the family moved to Marysville, Kansas, where father followed farming. At the age of eleven, she crossed the plains, following the old historic “covered wagon” trail, walking and driving a herd of milk cows the entire distance. Her childhood was spent with her family in pioneering the Walla Walla valley. On the 6th day of August, 1876 she was united in marriage to Morgan H. Tate and came to Asotin county immediately with her husband and settled adjacent to the lower Asotin round, in what is now a portion of south Vineland. Living there a few years, the family then moved to Asotin. She was the mother of six children, four sons and two daughters. She is survived by the following children: Leonard W. Tate, Waitsburg; Edward B. Tate, of Asotin; E. J. Tate, Seattle; and Mrs. R. C. Campbell of Walla Walla. One son, Harry Tate, and daughter Susan died several years ago. Besides her children, she is survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Besides these, she leaves three sisters, Mrs. Alice Dodson, Mrs. Laura McDonald, of Touchet, Wash; Mrs. Amanda Hadley, Los Angeles, Calif; and one brother, Luther Goble, of La Center.

Asotin county was recognized as her home for more than fifty-seven years. When she first came to Asotin county it was known as Walla Walla county; then Columbia county was carved off of Walla Walla county, and she was a resident of Columbia county. A little later Garfield county; and she was a resident of Garfield county; and next, Asotin county was created out of a portion of Garfield county, and Mrs. Tate was then a resident of Asotin county. Thus it will be seen that she had resided in four different counties without ever moving.

The deceased was a member of the Methodist church at Asotin, the Artisan lodge, the Women’s Relief Corps; and numerous smaller organizations at the Veterans’ home where she was located for a few years.

The deceased was a kind-hearted, neighborly woman, who was hospitable to the extreme, and possessed the friendship of all people who knew her. Regardless of the fact that she had loved more than four score of years, friends of years gone by, and particularly friends residing elsewhere, will be sorry to learn she has answered the final call. on Friday, 21 December 1934 Asotin, Asotin County, Washington.

Walter E Yager

M, b. November 1872
  • PARENTS*: Walter E Yager was the child of Cornelius J Yager & Elizabeth Pullian.
  • Biography*: He WALTER E. YAGER. The success achieved by this stirring young man is evidence of his worth and ability in the agricultural lines, while his excellence in the sawmilling business is equally as signal, having made
himself an expert sawyer in following it for a number of years.

Walter E. Yager was born in Hancock County, Illinois, being the son of Cornelius J. and Elizabeth (Pullian) Yager. The father was a farmer, born in 1844, in Illinois, and served under General Sigel in the cavalry
of the Civil war. His wife was born in Illinois and died in 1875. Her parents were Kentuckians and pioneers in Illinois. Walter remained in Illinois, where he gained his education, until fifteen, when he came to
Union County, Oregon, his father having come in 1882. He at once took up sawmilling and became expert as a sawyer. He followed this steadily until the reservation opened and in 1896 he selected a quarter section
near Melrose, and proved up on it on December 7, 1901, having lived steadily there during the intervening time.

On December 31, 1901, Mr. Yager married Miss Lillian, daughter of Jacob and Lucy (Palmer) Goble, the wedding occurring at Lewiston. Mr. Goble was a wagon-maker, born in Pennsylvania in 1822. He settled in Kansas in1857, and his daughter, Naoma, was the first white child born in Marysville, Kansas. In 1862 they came to WallaWalla and took land, and Mr. Goble and his wife are still living. Mrs. Goble was born in New York in 1830. Mrs. Yager was born in Lehigh, Utah, in 1872 and was educated in Marshall county, Kansas. She has the following sisters and brothers: William, in Kansas; Ophelia, in Oregon; Sarah, in Oklahoma: Don, in Lewiston; Anna, in Mount Idaho. Mr. Yager has two half sisters and one half brother.

On January 14, 1898, Mrs. Yager took a claim four miles northwest from Culdesac, where they now live. Mr. Yager handles both this and his own claim. He does a general farming business and raises stock also. He is thrifty, industrious and capable, and is one of the men who has done much for the general upbuilding and progress of the country.
