  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Emil Kanne, Dies; funeral on Sunday-Has been farmer in this community several years; passes away at age of 61 years-Final Rites were conducted Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and at 2 o’clock from the Yellowbank Evangellical church for Emil Henry Kanne, pioneer Big Stone county farmer who died on March 13 at the age of 61 years. The Rev. Aaron J Link officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery. At the services comforting selections were sung by Mrs.
    Harold VonEschen and by a mixed quartette made up of Mrs. William Kramer, Mrs. Myron Bethke, Leonard Kollitz and Ray Kalas. Emil Henry Kanne was born Jan. 6, 1879 in Lac Qui Parle county and as a youth knew the hardships of pioneer life on the then open prairies. On May 29, 1919, he was united in marriage with Ella Quast of Waterville, to which union two daughters were born, Stella and Delilah who with Mrs. Kanne survive. He also leaves six brothers and three sisters; Fred, Herman, William, George, Edward of Odessa, Martha (Mrs. Fred Gloege), Lydia (Mrs. Erwin Gloege) both of Odessa, Robert of Ortonville, Emma (Mrs. Reuben Hein) of Paynesville and Herbert of Bemidji. Deceased was a member of the Yellowbank Evangelical Church having been confirmed at one of the camp meetings during his early youth.   • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Services for Robert Kanne, 73, who passed away at the Ortonville hospital on Tuesday, were held from Schoen’s chapel at 2:30 o’clock this afternoon, with interment in the Yellowbank EUB cemetery. Until recent years, Mr. Kanne had been a resident of the Odessa community since childhood.-4 Aug 1955-Funeral services for Robert Kanne, lifetime resident of this community who passed away at the Ortonville hospital, August 2, following a brief illness, were held Thursday afternoon from the Schoen chapel, Rev. CO Becker officiated. Interment was in the Yellowbank EUB cemetery. Robert Kanne was born Sept. 18, 1881, in Agassiz township Lac Qui Parle county, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Julius Kanne. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Hoyles, to which union a son was born, who preceded him in death. Mr. Kanne until recent years when he moved from Odessa to Ortonville had farmed near Odessa. Besides his widow, he is survived by six brothers, Fred, Herman, William, George and Herbert of Bemidji, and by two sisters, Martha of Tacoma, WA and Lydia of Odessa. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services were held last Saturday, July 12, at the Hope United Methodist Church in Odessa, at 2pm. Interment was in Mound Cemetery, Ortonville. William G Kanne was born June 2, 1884, in Lac Qui Parle Co, to parents Julius and Charlotte Kanne. He was united in marriage to Elsie Kingsriter at Ortonville, Sept. 21, 1911. The Kannes farmed near Odessa, Mrs. Kanne died in 1961. Mr. Kanne went to live with his son Orval at Franklin in 1972 and had resided at the nursing home for one year and three months. Survivors are two sons, Orval of Franklin and Wayne of Milbank; eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Lydia Gloege of Odessa. He was preceded in death by his wife Elsie, nine brothers, three sisters and one grandchild.

  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Tractor Mishap Kills Ed Kanne, Rites on May 5-Funeral services for Edward W Kanne, age 85, were held on Monday afternoon, May 5th, in Odessa at the Hope United Methodist church. Burial followed in Mound Cemetery, Ortonville. Rev. Peter Nord officiated at the services and the congregational hymns were accompanied by Mrs. Donald Mielitz, organist. Edward William Kanne was born May 20, 1889, in Agassiz Township in Lac qui Parle Co., son of Julius and Charlotte Kanne, and one of 13 children born in the family. His early life was spent on the home farm and later on a farm in Odessa Township, where he spent the remainder of his life. He was married to Helena Amanda Wendland on Nov. 18, 1915, at her parents home in Iosco Township near Waseca, MN. He farmed all of his life and enjoyed working in the field. His death came last Thursday afternoon as a result of a tractor accident on his farm. Surviving are his daughter Elva (Mrs. Francis Lundgren) of Winfred, SD and his sons Elmond of Odessa and Erwin of Castle Rock, CO; also nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren, a sister, Lydia (Mrs. Erwin Gloege) and a brother William Kanne of Franklin, MN. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1964, his parents, three sisters and seven brothers. Pallbearers were Wayne, Orval and Lawrence Kanne, Gordon Gloege, Alvin Maas and Carl Maas. The Schoen-Ekelund Funeral Home was in charge on Wednesday, 7 May 1975 Ortonville, Big Stone County, Minnesota.

Herbert George Kanne

  • Note*: He Herbert George, the youngest of the sons married Lois Ferne Poirier on October 11, 1917 and continued to farm the "home place." Of this union was born a son, Gordon Herbert Kanne, August 24. 1918, a daughter, Lois Charlotte Kanne, May 10, 1922 and another son, Ellsworth LeRoy Kanne, August 20, 1930. The first two children were born at the home farm in Odessa, Minnesota and Ellsworth was born at Bemidji, Minnesota. Herbert Kanne and family moved from the Odessa farm in October of 1923 to make a new home in Bemidji, Minnesota. Blue Valley Creamery was under construction at the time and Herbert Kanne took employment with this project. Upon completion of the plant he remained as an employee in the plant where cream was received from the local farm community and processed into the various dairy products. Subsequently the plant was purchased by the Russell Creamery Co. of Duluth, Minnesota. A transfer followed and Herbert worked a short time but returned to Bemidji and his family to find employment in the logging industry of the area. During the years that followed he trucked, sawed, owned a wood yard and worked in the various jobs associated with the lumber industry of the area. He remained with this type work until the early 1940's when he took up employment with the local school district. He worked at various jobs with the Bemidji Public School District and also the State Teachers College. Several falls made it physically impossible for him to continue and he spent his remaining years in retirement jobs he found capable of performing. He was living at 807 Twelfth street and Beltrami Nursing Home when he died of cancer on July 28, 1974. The one daughter, Lois Charlotte passed away as a result of flu in December 28, 1927. Gordon and Ellsworth received their K through 12th grade education in the Bemidji Schools before continuing further education. The family were members of the First Methodist Church (changed to United Methodist Church) since their arrival in the Bemidji area. Mr. Kanne was born at Odessa, MN, Aug. 4, 1893, the son of Julius and Charlotte Kanne. He grew up there and moved to Bemidji in 1923 where he was employed by the Blue Valley Creamery Co. Later he was self employed as a wood dealer and was a route man for the Land O Lakes Creamery before becoming a custodian working at the public schools and the college prior to his retirement. He was married to Lois Ferne Peirier at Odessa Oct. 11, 1917. Survivors include two sons, Gordon H of Albert Lea and EL (Roy) of Tasewell, VA; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers; William and Edward Kanne and a sister, Mrs. Erv Gloege, all of Odessa. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, six brothers and three sisters-30 Jul 1974-The Pioneer Bemidji on Tuesday, 30 July 1974 Bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota.

Lydia Helen Gloege was born Nov. 16, 1896, in Agassiz Twp, Lac qui Parle Co. to parents, Julius and Charlotte (Bethke) Kanne. She grew up and attended school at rural Odessa. On Oct. 23, 1924 Lydia was united in marriage to Erwin A Gloege at her brother’s home in Yellowbank Twp. The couple farmed near Odessa until retirement in 1986 when they moved into Ortonville. In 1990 they both entered the Clinton Good Samaritan Center at Clinton where Lydia passed away on Wednesday, June 15.. She was a past member of the Yellowbank EUB Church and the Hope United Methodist church at Odessa, where she was an active member of the Ladies Aid and a present member of Zion Methodist Church in Bellingham. Lydia was also a member of the Silver Threads Homemakers Club. She enjoyed baking, Canning and gardening. Survivors include, her husband Erwin of Clinton, one daughter and son in law, Elaine and Dan Nawrocki of Odessa, two sons and daughters in law, Gerald and Bernice Gloege of Roshollt, SD and Gordon and Ruth Ann Gloege of Ortonville; four grandchildren, Jeffery Gloege and Rhonda Frankl both of Parker, CO; Monica Simonitch of Ortonville and Bruce Gloege of Brandon, SD and six great grandchildren. Stella married Alden "Al" Whiting on September 24, 1949 in Waterville and he preceded her in death on October 25, 2001. Stella spent most of her life working as a homemaker. She enjoyed flower gardening and animals - especially cats and dogs. She is survived by her daughter, Carol (Larry) Walburn of Waterville; two grandchildren, Gary (Tammy) Walburn of Morristown and Christina Walburn and special friend Joel Mendel of Walnut Creek, CA; and the caring staff of The Plum House and Faribault Area Hospice. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one sister-Delilia Benjamin. Private family services are being held at Prosch-Dennis Funeral Home in Waterville.   • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Funeral services were held on Monday, May 24, 1993, at 10:30 from Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Waterville, for Delila Benjamin, 67, who died on Friday, May 21, 1993, at Good Samaritan Center, Waterville. Father Michael Ince celebrated the Mass of Christian Burial and interment was in Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers were Orville Kewatt, Wilfred Dwyer, Larry Walburn, Alva Benshoof, Randy Bauer and Brian Mills. Delila Kanne Benjamin was born on June 20, 1925, to Emil and Ella Quast Kanne at Odessa, MN. She was a graduate of Waterville High School, Class of 1943, and was a homemaker, worked for Mercury MN at Faribault and Herters in Waseca for many years. On Oct. 12, 1948, she was married to Louis Benjamin at Faribault. He preceded her in death on June 22, 1985. Survivors include sons, Richard and Cindy Benjamin of Eagan and Dennis and Hazel Benjamin of Owatonna, and three grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Al (Stella) Whiting of Waterville. Prosch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
