died at Los Angeles last Saturday. Over 60 years ago he came with his parents
to Colfax from Santa Rosa, Calif., and his parents homesteaded land which now
embraces the Colfax cemetery.
He moved to Pampa in 1883 and engaged in stock raising with his father.
Later he returned to Colfax and was employed in the Burgunder & Schwabacher
store. In 1891 he and A. J. Webster opened the store of the Colfax Mercantile
company. At other times he was engaged in the mercantile business in The
Dalles, Ore., Twin Falls, Ida., LaCrosse, Wash., Auburn, Wash., and Ballard,
Wash. In the early days of Colfax he had a string of racing horses and made
the circuit of county fairs.
The body was brought to Colfax, arriving Thursday morning and funeral
services were held at the Methodist church. The Rev. W. G. R. Dann of Lacrosse
officiating. Selected for pallbearers were George Camp, John Zaring and D. E.
Pickard of LaCrosse, Thos. H. Benton and Chas. E. Scriber of Colfax, and Walter
Davenport of Spokane.
Surviving are his widow, Elizabeth Bowman, a son, Francis Bowman, Los
Angeles; three sisters, Mrs. Alice Gordon, LaCrosse; Mrs. George Gildersleeve,
Washtucna, and Mrs. Mary Higgins, Boston. L. D. Hoover of Lacrosse is a
nephew.
