  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the SANTA ROSAN IS DROWNED AT BODEGA BAY: COMPANION IS SAVED FROM LIKE FATE
A fishing trip tragedy on Bodega bay late Saturday afternoon claimed the life of George “Tut” Lamb, 32, former high school football star of Santa Rosa. His body has not been recovered. James Joy, 30, also of Santa Rosa, narrowly escaped the fate of his companion, but was saved by a timely rescue. Lamb lost his life when a small boat he occupied with Joy, capsized after being struck by a huge wave. Galen Zumwalt, 30, and Marvin Dorman, Santa Rosa ranchers, fishing just inside Bodega bay in another boat, saw the accident. Zumwalt and Dorman, whose boat , like the other, was powered by an outboard motor went to shore. Zumwalt ran to the Bodega bay settlement to obtain aid, and Dorman put out over the bar alone in an attempt to rescue the men. Dorman then turned his tiny craft toward the harbor, but before he could reach safety, a large swell caught and overturned it. Meanwhile, Zumwalt enlisted the aid of Al Mosier, a Bodega bay fisherman, and the two put out in Mosier’s inboard fishing boat. They reached Joy and Dorman just before they sank from exhaustion. When Dorman’s boat overturned he grasped Joy as they went into the water, and was still holding his dead weight above water when Mosier arrived. Mosier and Zumwalt pulled the two into the boat and tried to get back through the bar passage. In the falling darkness they missed it and went aground. Spectators on shore, before it became completely dark, said Mosier signaled with his arms that Joy was still unconscious and in need of medical care. Deputy Sheriffs and fisherman organized a rescue party but their efforts were thwarted by the darkness which made it impossible to locate the boat. The noise of the pounding surf made it impossible to hear the stranded party. Point Reyes Coast Guard motor launch was dispatched from the station south of the bay to help with the rescue. Joy, Zumwalt and Dorman are all employed by the Poultry Producers of Central California. They are veteran fisherman, according to friends. Lamb also worked for the poultry organization. He was the son of George Lamb, veteran Northwestern Pacific railroad employee. He was married, his wife being the former Gladys Farley of Santa Rosa. With the widow survives a child aged 5 years.
