  "In his diary entry for Friday, June 30, James Nesmith states, "Sergeant Gilmore on guard." Oregon's Fading Past states that S. M. Gilmore and his wife Martha eventually settled in Sherman County, Oregon. Mr. Gilmore was born March 17, 1815 and died November 5, 1893, making him twenty-eight years old while he was on the trail and seventy-eight when he died. His wife was Martha A. Gilmore. She would have turned twenty-five on the trail. The couple was married for more than fifty years at the time of the death of S. M. One of their children was Brittana C.
