  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Sheriff Gilliam Rites on Tuesday

Large Concourse of Friends Attest Esteem in Which Held; Death Sunday Came Suddenly

“Look out, boys, I’m coming,” the last words spoken by Sheriff Dick Gilliam before he died Sunday at 12:45 p.m., are significant in that they imply friendliness, comradeship, a love of people, a liking for association with others, which was characteristic of the man.
Mr. Gilliam became ill about 11 o’clock Sunday forenoon, complaining of a severe pain in the region of his stomach. He had not been in good health for a year or more, and when a doctor was called he knew from previous examination that it was undoubtedly a heart attack. All that could be done proved unavailing.
    Saw World War Service
A world war veteran, a peace officer for 14 years, Ransom L. Gilliam was born of pioneer stock, his grandparents being early settlers in Oregon, Gilliam county having been named for his grandfather. He was born at Colfax February 15, 1897 and attended high school there. He married Alice Cary Oliver of Potlatch, April 16, 1921, at Moscow, Idaho.
When the United States entered the world war in 1917, Gilliam volunteered and was assigned to the 41st division for overseas duty, but was later transferred to the 2nd division. He was top sergeant, in company F, 23rd engineers, when discharged after three years of service. He suffered a severe shrapnel abdominal wound in a battle on the war front in France, and was also a victim of poisonous gas. He never fully recovered from the disability caused by his war experiences.
He was a member of the Masonic and Knights of Pythias lodges here, and of the Pomeroy posts of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
    First Here in 1924
Mr. Gilliam was first known to Garfield county people when in 1924 he and his father-in-law, Arthur Oliver, bought the Henry Mengee property in the Tucannon valley, 12 miles south of Pomeroy, and named it the U & I ranch. Later he sold his interest to Mr. Oliver and took a deputyship offered him in the sheriff’s office at Dayton, 14 years ago. He served in that capacity three years, then was made deputy in Garfield county by the newly-elected sheriff, James Patterson, a place he held for about seven years. He became sheriff of Garfield county in January, 1939. He learned the finger-print system while serving as an officer in Columbia county, and became a recognized expert throughout the northwest in his field. During his official career he installed a fingerprint card system in the local sheriff’s office, in which are filed many thousands of fingerprint records secured from sheriff’s offices, police departments and penal institutions of the northwest, as well as several hundred taken locally in the routine of business.
“Dick,” as he was known to hundreds of persons, including about all the peace officers of the northwest, may have had faults—who hasn’t—but he had many admirable qualities that far outweighed, for most people, any human imperfections he may have possessed.
Gentlemanly, courteous, dignified, accommodating, friendly — these were dominant characteristics of Dick Gilliam. He had the faculty of making friends everywhere he went. Naturally, in the course of duty, he incurred the enmity of some in making arrests, but it has often been remarked by other officers that Dick could arrest and jail a man and still keep his good will, of which there are many known instances.
He had natural capacity as an officer. Keen-eyed, he never forgot a face, and had a remarkable memory for facts, and knew the make of most Garfield county cars, their license numbers and owners.
    Surviving Relatives
Surviving are his widow, Alice, and four children, all at home: Mabel, Stanley, Geraldine, and Larry; his mother, Mrs. Nancy Gilliam, Spokane; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Morgan, Spokane, and Mrs. Jim Simmons, Milton-Freewater; six brothers, Nelson, Otis and Rolland, Walla Walla, the Rev. Arthur Gilliam and Alfred Gilliam, Moscow, Idaho, and Marvin Gilliam, Fresno, Calif.
    Last Rites Tuesday
The last rites were held at the C.M. Vassar chapel Tuesday at 2 p.m. Rev. William M. Martin, former Methodist minister here, but assigned to the Ellensburg pastorate in June was called to preach the funeral sermon. His message was one of comfort to the bereaved family, and the scriptural promise of a happy reunion in the life to come between relatives and friends, was an assurance that gives hope to the sorrowing.
A male quartet, composed of Bob Bagby, Bob Mayfield, Clark Fitzsimmons and Marvin Long, sang several appropriate selections, accompanied at the console by Miss Virginia Burkholder.
    600 in Attendance
Altogether about six hundred persons attended the last rites, many from other localities, which with the profusion of floral tributes showed the high regard in which the departed was held. Many who could not personally attend sent flowers from a distance. The business houses of Pomeroy were closed during the services.
    Honorary Pallbearers
The honorary pallbearers were Harry L. Chard, Mearns T. Gates, Ed Mueller of Olympia, Alex L. Cabbage, W. Acha Towner, and Paul Potter. Active pallbearers: Clarence Ellis, state highway patrolman, stationed at Dayton; W. W. Hays, sheriff of Nez Perce county, Lewiston; Ben Taplin, sheriff, and Hugh Curry, deputy sheriff of Asotin county, Asotin; Carson Walker, sheriff of Whitman county, Colfax; and C.A. Woodward, sheriff of Walla Walla county.
Members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars attended the funeral in a body. The Masonic order had charge of the committal service at the grave, and the flag which draped the casket was presented to Mrs. Gilliam, in recognition of her husband’s war service to his country.
Interment was in the city cemetery.
