David J. Holmes, a pioneer Oregonian and prominent resident of Salem, passed away at his home in this city, 1865 Broadway Street, Sunday afternoon at the age of 76 years.
Having come to Oregon when 9 years old he had lived in the state more than sixty years. He had long been interested in the affairs of the states and twice served as county clerk of Polk county. He was a Mason and one of the first students of Willamette university.
Mr. Holmes was born in Pike county, Illinois, July 1, 1839, and was a son of H.N. V. and Nancy Holmes, who crossed the plains to Oregon in 1848, settling in Polk county on a donation land claim twelve miles north of Salem.
Much of his life was passed in Polk county. For a long time he farmed on a twenty-acre tract one mile west of Salem and also was a prominent sheep raiser, until 1889, when he suffered the loss of several thousand, which were buried under five feet of snow in Wasco county in a storm.
In 1869 he was married to Miss Mary E. Lewis, a native of Marion county and a daughter of J.H. and Ellen (Gilliam) Lewis, also pioneers of 1847.
Surviving Mr. Holmes are his widow; Webster Holmes, an attorney of Tillamook; Frank Holmes, a former Salem attorney, and now a resident of McMinnville; Estella, wife of Joseph D. Fentafay of Baker county; and Ella, the wife of T.C. Shewkewiler of Victor, Montana.
Among the grandchildren, are the children of Frank Holmes, who are Frank Jr., Philip and George Webster.
The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon under the auspices of First Church of Christ Scientist of this city, Mrs. Percy Cupper sang " In Heavenly Love Abiding) and "Mother's Evening Prayer" - Burial was in City View cemetery.

- Note: He Mayberry Splawn was the captain of his wagon train. On the 10th day of the trip, Mayberry died of cholera. After his death, the other members of the team elected Bethena, the widow, to be the new "team captain". Francis, a lad of 18, helped his mother and the six younger children complete the trip across the plains. He was the one who talked to the Indians and performed many hazardous tasks as the wagon train moved along the trail. In 1855, he enlisted as a volunteer from Lane County to fight in the Rogue River Indian War. In 1856, he was a member of the 2nd Regiment of the Oregon Territory Vol.
