McMinnville, Jan. 31. - William l. Toney, the oldest man in Yamhill county, celebrated his 97th birthday anniversary Wednesday at the home of his son, H. Toney, with a birthday dinner attended by the families of his two sons, resident here, his nephew, C.J. Payne, and his nieces, Mrs. W.L. Warren and Mrs. H.C. Burns. Mr. Toney was born in Callaway county, Missouri, January 30, 1827, and came West in 1847, when he was 20 years old. He spent the winter at Vancouver, Wash. Later he took a donation land claim near Sheridan, Or., known now as the McKinley place. He enlisted in the Cayuse Indian war under Captain Billy Burnett in 1848 and the following year was drawn to California by the gold excitement. He married Miss Elsie Carlisle March 4, 1851. Mr. Toney drove cattle for a number of years, then came to McMinnville and built the old McMinnville hotel, a frame structure on B street. At this time he also operated a stage line from Sheridan to Portland in partnership with Jeptha Garrison. He platted Toney's addition to McMinnville, on which stands the courthouse, and built several residences in an adjoining block. Six of Mr. Toney's grand uncles enlisted in the Revolutionary war from Virginia and were in General Washington's army at Valley Forge, all of them surviving the war. Mr. Toney has always been a Democrat and can recount campaign issues in the time of Franklin Pierce and Martin Van Buren with a mental clarity that is the wonder of his many friends. He has estimated how many times to go around a city block to make a half mile. He takes a mile walk a day in morning and evening trips. He is in good health and confidently expects to make the century mark.
