  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Former McMinnville resident John Edward Hoffman of Forest Grove died Oct. 8, 2002, in Forest Grove. He was 82. A memorial service will be held later in Eagle Valley Cemetery, Richland. The chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville, will be open for viewing from noon to 7 p.m. Friday and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday. He was born June 14, 1920, in Council, Idaho, the son of George and Jasmine Garrett Hoffman. He was raised in Sparta. He served in the Army from 1944 to 1946, including service in World War II. He and Edna Nale were married June 25, 1939, in Creswell. The couple divorced in 1966. He and Thelma Shipton were married April 17, 1969, in Walla Walla, Wash. He moved to Pendleton in 1969 and worked as a log truck driver for several companies. He later owned and operated his own logging truck and also drove a produce truck. He retired in the late 1970s. Mr. Hoffman moved from Pendleton to Halfway in 1998 and to Osprey Pointe in McMinnville in 2001. He had lived in Forest Grove since June. Survivors include three daughters, Linda Taylor of Yamhill and Sharon Chase and Frances Harkness, both of Baker City; two sons, Charles E. Hoffman of Pendleton and Johnny Hoffman of Alaska; two sisters, Eula Grissom of Baker City and Peggy Haynes of Hermiston; a brother, William Hoffman of Washington; four stepsons, Mike Shipton of Salem, Bill Shipton and Tim Shipton, both of Pendleton, and Steve Shipton of Florida; a stepdaughter, Karen Kidder of Portland; and many grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his second wife, Thelma, in 1997 and by a son, Charles Aber Hoffman, in 1954. She lived in California for two years before moving to Klamath Falls again in 1951. She moved to Willamina in 1952, but didn’t stay there long either before moving back to Klamath Falls and attended school there until 1953. In 1953, she moved back to Yamhill and remained in Yamhill until 1956, then moved to Richland, Oregon. She stayed there for 1 year before moving to North Powder, Oregon. As a sophomore at North Powder High School, Linda met “the man”, Larry Taylor, who she would marry three years later. She graduated from high school in North Powder, Oregon in 1961. She lived in North Powder, Oregon until 1966 when they moved to Tigard, Oregon to live with Auntie June and Uncle Jim for awhile, while dad found a job and a place for the family to live. The family moved to Bradberry Court, which is now where Bridgeport Plaza is located (between the Lake Oswego exit and the Carmen Drive exit) a few months later. The family remained there until moving to Newberg, Oregon in 1968. In July of 1973, the family moved to Yamhill, Oregon. Linda was predeceased by her husband, Larry; and a baby brother. Linda is survived by her daughter, Laurie Boyce, of Aurora; son, Bobby Taylor, of WA; sisters: Sharon Chase, of Baker City, and Francis Harkness, of Estacada; brothers: Johnny Hoffman and Chuck Hoffman, both of Pendleton; three grandsons; a great-granddaughter and a great-grandson; her uncle, Dick Nale, of Corvallis; and numerous nieces and nephews. Linda enjoyed camping, gardening, spending time with her family, sewing square dance clothing for her family, and she enjoyed square dancing. A public viewing will be held on Friday, July 21st from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Macy and Son Funeral Home in McMinnville, and on Saturday morning, July 22nd from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Macy and Son. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at noon at the Yamhill Carlton Pioneer Cemetery, with a family potluck at the Lower Carlton Park (Wenneberg Park). Chaplain Lora Johnson will be officiating the service. after 11 July 2017.
