A 43-year-old Crane welder, injured in an explosion when a junk gasoline truck blew up just north of Crane Monday afternoon, died early Tuesday of massive head injuries at Medical Center Hospital. Dewey Tipton suffered burns and head injury while he was cutting into the junk gasoline truck owned by Toots Mathis, Crane Police Chief Bill Lee said. "The gas fumes in the truck ignited and the whole rear end of the tanker blew out, hitting Tipton," Lee said. The accident happened about 2 p.m., and Tipton was transferred to Medical Center Hospital where he was admitted at 3:10 p.m. He was taken first to Crane Memorial Hospital, treated and transferred to the Odessa hospital. Tipton died at the Odessa hospital 5:55 a.m. Tuesday. The Sheppard Funeral Home in Crane was handling arrangements Tuesday to send the body to a funeral home in Bell Gardens, Calif. Born June 22, 1931, in Canadian County, Okla., hewas married to Margaret Smith on May 25, 1958, in Los Angeles, Calif. Survivors include the widow of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Donna Kelley of Crane, and Ronna Gay Tipton and Lonna Renee Tipton, both of the home; a brother, Doland Tipton of Crane; a sister, Mrs. Mildred Roach of Bell Gardens, Calif., and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Tipton of Bell Gardens, Calif.
