  PEARSON, Vaneta Kruse Passed away on Monday, August 10, 1998. She was born on November 12, 1907 in Roseburg, Oregon. She was the youngest of the 12 children of the combined families of George Kruse and Carrie Mabley. Her grandfather, William Kruse, came from Hanover, Germany. He worked and farmed in the Midwest before buying 500 acres of farmland near Oakland, Oregon in 1876. When he retired he settled in Roseburg. Her father, George, born in Iowa in 1863, was 13 when he came to Oregon with the family. He became a merchant and store owner in Roseburg. The combined families of George Kruse and Carrie Mabley were raised in Roseburg. Vera, 1892; Clifford, 1893; Walter, 1894; Vesla, 1895; Ray 1895; Lenoir, 1896; Dewey, 1989; Bert, 1899; Velma, 1901; Clarence, 1901; Veta, 1904 and Vaneta, 1907. The big house still stands out on Melrose Road now lovingly cared for by Dennis and Chally Kruse. Her mother Carrie Kruse, was fundamental in starting the first Seventh-day Adventist Church in Roseburg in 1904. Vaneta attended the local church school and continued her education to graduate from Walla Walla College in College Place, Washington. In July 1926 she married Ralph Pearson and the following month sailed for Korea to do mission work for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. After seven years of service they returned to the States and fulfilled a life long dream when Ralph graduated from Loma Linda University in 1940. They set up their first medical practice in Portland, Oregon. Because of their knowledge of the Korean language they received a call, in 1948 to return and work at the Seoul Adventist Hospital. The start of the Korean War forced them to leave. They returned to the US and in 1951 Ralph set up his medical practice in Roseburg. Vaneta graduated from college with a degree in Education. She taught school in Korea at the Adventist Church School and at the School for Diplomat Children. She taught at Portland Adventist Academy and also worked for various faculty members at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Ralph and Vaneta were both life long members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and always interested in Christian education. They would say,"You can't afford not to give them the opportunity." Vaneta's husband, R. W. Pearson, MD died in Roseburg in September of 1987. She is survived by her daughter, Anita Schultz and son Bert Pearson; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the church marked Education would be appreciated and provide a long-lasting acknowledgment.
