- Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Mrs. Ursula Douglass commonly spoken of as "Grandma Douglass", died at 1:30 a.m., today at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mary F. Douglass, on Star street. The funeral will be held at the house Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., after which the remains will be taken to Douglass for interment by the side of her two sons, Joseph W., and William J. Ursula Shaff was born in Sodus, Wayne county, New York, on September 11, 1814, where she lived one of a large family until she was married to S.P.W. Douglass on September 14th, 1834. From this union four children were born, two of whom, W.H. Douglass, of this city, and Mrs. W.M. Lamb, of Hoquiam, Washington, survive her. Her life has been an eventful one; shrouded by poverty in her childhood days and under the then existing scarcity of educational facilities she still managed to gain a fair common school education. Adversity followed into her married life leaving her to support of a crippled husband and her little children and for years she assisted in their maintenance by teaching the then almost unknown art of stenography and also several different styles of penmanship. When the Civil war broke out she cheerfully gave all her children who were able to go, to the support of their country. In 1884, all but one of her children having moved to Kansas, she followed them here with her oldest son, the late W.J. Douglass and his family, and has since been a resident of this county. During all of these years up almost to the time of her death she has been a hard worker, always ready to undertake what mind and hands could find to do and in all her trials and tribulations she has never heard to complain of the hardships surrounding her or murmur at the privations she had to endure. She has always been cheerful under affliction and ready to lighten the burdens of those around her even though not as great as hers. In her young days she espoused the cause of Christianity and has always been a devout believer and faithful worker in that cause. She almost at first united with the Methodist Episcopal church of which she has ever since remained a member. Her last illness was of short duration caused by the shock received from an accident from which she never rallied but quietly passed away at 1:30 Tuesday morning July 11. All her relatives resident to this county were at her bedside and her last intelligent words were "all ma's children must be good children' and this has been her teaching to all those who knew her.
