BATES, Oliver, Samuel, and Almira: Searching for the parents of Almira BATES, (b. about 1800 in MA, m. Thomas Shaff about 1820 probably in Jefferson County, and had at least 4 children 1822-1832 in Oswego Co, d. 1880 in Green Co. WI). 1820 census listed Thomas Shaff (Shaft) in Houndsfield with young female (probably Almira) and no children, living adjacent to Henry Shaff (probably his father). According to the 1820 census, also adjacent to the Shaff families were the families of Dairus Bates, Oliver Bates, and Sally Bates. The 1810 census lists the families of Moses Bates, Samuel Bates, and Samuel Bates Jr as near the Henry Shaft household in Houndsfield, while Oliver Bates and Oliver Bates Jr were listed in Henderson. 1800 census shows Oliver in Oneida co. Oliver Bates (Jr?) also shows up near Thomas Shaff in the 1830 census after the Shaffs had moved to Hannibal, Oswego Co, NY.
Revolutionary War Pension Application Files document Oliver Bates' move from Shelburne MA to Randolph VT to Henderson NY, dying there 8 Jun 1828. Can anyone help me sort out who Almira's parents are, and which of the others might be brothers, uncles, etc. Also looking for record of Almira Bates' marriage to Thomas Shaff.

    J. W. DOUGLASS, deceased, brother of the above, came to Kansas in July, 1868, locating on what is now the town site of Douglass in Butler County; from his name the town derived its name. He selected the location and the choice was a good one, as it is one of the most desirable in the State. Mr. Douglass was closely identified with the development of that locality and was one of the most public spirited men in the county. His death occurred in 1872. He was a native of Wayne County, N. Y., and entered the Army at the same time his brother did and in the same company and regiment. He was taken prisoner and spent a year in Andersonville and Salisbury; when released he weighed but sixty-seven pounds. Mr. Douglass was the pioneer merchant and first Postmaster of Douglass.

  • Note: He Joseph W. Douglass, the founder of the city, and after whom the city and township were named, was shot and mortally wounded on the townsite in 1873. He had taken a lively interest in the suppressing of thieving in the community, and on the night of his murder had arrested, without a warrant, a camper he suspected of stealing chickens. The man had chickens in his possession and did not give a plausible account of where or how he obtained them. Douglass marched his prisoner to several places where he had said he purchased the fowls, but the parties denied having sold them to him. The prisoner, evidently fearing the fate of others, shot his captor with a small pistol he had in his possession. Douglass was armed with a larger revolver, but had failed to disarm his prisoner. The man ran and Douglass fired at him several times, but failed to hit him. Douglass lived a day or two after being wounded and requested that no injury be inflicted upon the murderer. He was captured, tried and sent to the penitentiary for ten years.
