  • (Witness) Census: He appeared on the census of 23 November 1850 in the household of Littleton Mathis at Rochester, Andrew County, Missouri.
  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Thomas H. Matthis known to many people as Uncle Tom passed away at his home in the Pleasant Hill neighborhood in the northwestern part of DeKalb County, and some eight miles southeast of King City, Monday afternoon about two o'clock. He had not been in the most robust health for some years but got around all right and his last actual illness lasted only about a week. He would have been 87 years old this coming December. He was a long time resident of this county and moved to this county back in the days when the Pleasant Hill area was mostly raw prairie, He was two times married. His second wife died about 5 years ago. He made his home in the recent years with his son Homer on the home place. He leaves four children. Uncle Tom was one of the bright, cheerful, good citizens of DeKalb county. He was an ardent democrat and had a practice of taking the clean side of public issues and standing up for what he believed to be right in public and political affairs. He was dead down on the liquor business. He loved his friends and he loved to meet with them and show the human touch. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill Church. For a good many years he had been rather hard of hearing, but like most any other man with a real heartbeat, he got lots of joy out of life even though he could not hear everything that was said in his presence.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home, conducted by W. C. Whitehouse, minister of the King City Christian Church. Burial was in the Winslow Cemetery. on Sunday, 4 October 1925 DeKalb County, Missouri.

Sunday evening about 5:30 news came to town that on the baseball grounds at Mt. Scott, Sunday afternoon, James Dixon, a young man about 17 years of age, had shot and killed Charles Rice, a young man about 23 years of age.
Owen Atterbury, a constable of that precinct, was present and saw the shooting and immediately arrested young Dixon without a warrant and brought him to town last night, and he is still in Mr. Atterbury's charge.
From Mr. Atterbury, who witnessed the shooting, we learn that these two young men had had difficulty before this, and a small provocation, it seems, revived the old feud. It appears that some misunderstanding concerning the ball game awakened old ill feelings and a few hot words were interchanged between them, when Rice was heard to say he would thresh Dixon, and immediately began to take off his coat, while threatening Dixon. At this Dixon drew his pistol from his pocket and shot Rice twice, killing him almost instantly. Owen Atterbury, the constable of Mt. Scott, who has had Dixon in charge, procurred a warrant this morning from Justice Hamlin and placed Dixon under arrest as provided by law.
This is another disagreeable affair in our county that is sure to be annoying to all parties involved and is deeply deplored by all good citizens. As this affair will be brought into court and tried according to the process of law the Plaindealer forbears making any comment, pro or con, with regard to justifiable or unjustifiable homicide, believing newspaper trials do not subserve any good purpose. We give the account of the affair as reported by the constable, Mr. Atterbury, who brought Dixon to the city last night, as before stated, and await the result as the courts shall dispose of it in due time.
