    Prominent Jurist Dies In Portland

Hundreds of his friends and associates from all walks of life crowded the J.P. Finley funeral chapel in Portland Wednesday afternoon to attend final rites for Judge Bert E. Haney of the United States circuit court of appeals, who died Saturday at his home in Portland after an extended illness. A native son of Yamhill county, he was 64 years old.

The Rev. S. James Osborne of the First Christian church of McMinnville officiated at the service, which was followed by a private commitment at Portland.

Judge Haney suffered a nervous collapse several months ago following the death of his only son, John Robert Haney, who succumbed in San Francisco after an operation for removal of a brain tumor.

He was born in Lafayette, Yamhill County, in April 1879, and except for the time he spent in Washington as a member of the United States shipping board, and in San Francisco while on the circuit bench, he had lived almost all his life in Oregon.
He was a director of the Oregon Mutual Fire Insurance Company of McMinnville.

Haney, a democrat, was appointed to the circuit court of appeals by President Roosevelt in 1935 to climax a political career started in 1896 when as a freshman at Willamette University at Salem. He campaigned in behalf of William Jennings Bryan for the presidency.

He worked as a clerk in the law office of the late William D. Fenton, then head counsel for the Southern Pacific railroad, in Portland while attending University of Oregon law school, from which he was graduated in 1903.

Haney was appointed Multnomah County deputy district attorney in 1904 and at the conclusion of that term in 1908 he entered a law partnership with the late George W. Joseph. Haney continued with the firm until his appointment to the circuit court of appeals.

President Wilson named Haney U.S. attorney for Oregon in 1918. He served until 1920 and later was appointed to the U.S. shipping board by President Harding, resigning in 1926.

He served as chairman of the Oregon state board of pardons and paroles in 1922 and 1923; was state democratic chairman, 1910-1915; for some time was chairman of the state advisory board of PWA and HOLC. He also was an ex-president of the Oregon League of Nations association, and ex-chairman of the Port of Portland commission.

Haney was the son of John and Mary Harris Haney. His father, who never recovered from wounds suffered in Indian fighting under General George A. Custer, died when he was a youngster. The lad worked after school and during vacations on farms and at other odd jobs. While still in school he taught a rural school in Yamhill County.

He was educated in the Lafayette public schools, Willamette University, which he attended from 1896 to 1899; University of Oregon law school, from which he was graduated in 1903. In 1937, Linfield College awarded him the honorary degree of doctor of laws.

Haney won the democratic nomination for U.S. senator in 1926 but was defeated in the general election by Frederick W. Steiwer, republican.
