Her father was a ranch hand and self-styled author and poet. He valued education and both Darleen and her sister, Bonnie, attended Laurelwood Academy and Walla Walla College. Her father worked for the Imperial Stock Ranch in central Oregon. The owner's, Mary and George Ward, essentially adopted the girls. After finishing College, Darleen married Ivan Wentland who later died in military service. Darleen subsequently was employed as Registrar of Auburn Academy and as a Secretary at Boeing. She married a Boeing Engineer, Ray Horton. They've been together 62+ years. She had three children, Wendy, Tami, and Julie, and two step daughters, Connie Strain and Cher Reed.
  Following her family tradition, she was a member of the Adventist Church but later changed to Unitarianism. She still greatly appreciated her past Adventist friends and their support as well as her Lake Crest neighbors. She was on the founding board of Merrywood School which subsequently became The Kindering Center. She was an avid reader and loved to play Bridge with her friends. Then there were tennis and various water sports. She was a fantastic cook and enjoyed eating at a good restaurant. She was a wonderful travel companion and loved the view from her home above Lake Sammamish. She had found the property which they were able to purchase at a more affordable time. She was greatly loved.
  She is survived by her husband Ray, daughters, Cher and Julie, grandchildren, Josie, Ellie, Brian, his wife Danielle, her great grandchildren, Amy and Anna, and son-in-law Joe Strain and his wife Catherine. Gifts are encouraged to Cancer research and Evergreen Hospice. We must mention our gratitude for our daughter-in-law, Catherine Strain, for helping us through the hospice process . Services honoring Darleen's life will be held at the Bellevue East Shore Unitarian Church at 3:00 on October 22. on Sunday, 9 October 2022 Seattle, King County, Washington.
