John McDowell (Daniel & John were the sons of William McDowell) and cousins of the Quaker Meadows and Pleasant Garden McDowells of Burke, McDowell, Buncombe, Haywood County.
William McDowell married Elizabeth Templeton in Rowan County, NC Feb. 27, 1772. William is the son of James McDowell and grandson of Robert McDowell of Mecklenburg Co. NC. The marriage record states she is an Indian Woman.
William McDowell's father in-law James Templeton is mentioned in Edward W Phifer's, "Burke County: A Brief History", under The Presbyterian Church. "The first known minister of the old Quaker Meadow Presbyterian Church (which S. J. Ervin, Jr., suggest existed before 1777) was the Reverend James Templeton, who had been educated at Nassau Hall(now Princeton University)and was pastor at Quaker Meadows and Pleasant Gardens in 1784". In 1783 an act was passed to incorporate trustees for two accademical schools in the district of Morgan, one named Morgan Academy in Burke Co and the other is in Washington Co. The Act stipulated that Mr. James Templeton be the president of the "body politic" and corporate by the name of president and trustees of Morgan Accademy in the county of Burke. Templeton was a Presbyterian minister and a graduate of Nassau Hall. He was still a member of Orange Presbytery in 1788 and was still living in or near Morganton in 1790. I have Records also from Princeton University on James Templeton.
William McDowell was a neighbor of John Carson at Old Fort according to Silas McDowell is his letter to Lyman Draper. I have a copy of land records and have transcribed the Draper Manuscript of Rev. John McDowell to Copeland Draper.
I have seen the O'Dell name mentioned in a few books but have not been able to tie into our McDowell family other then the two families seem to travel together. I think William had daughters or granddaughters that married O'Dell's.
Jefre Gillem (Gilliam) married Jeanette McDowell daughter of William McDowell and they moved to MO.
William had a grandson John Templeton McDowell who is the son of William's son George McDowell.
I believe William had a son Charles who married Rachel Redd and they had daughters Elninder and Mary. Could this be the Elninder in the Estate record of William McDowell.
Eleazer McDowell is a son of William and his family settled in Cherokee Co. and then on to MO and Dubuque, Co Iowa.
William's daughter Elizabeth married William Owens, daughter of Owen Owens and they had a son Daniel McDowell Owens.
Daniel McDowell had several children and his son Rev. John McDowell of Haywood & Macon County married Elizabeth Caldwell, granddaughter of Alexander Caldwell. This is my line. (Diana Schafer Ford) Daniel was a surveyor of Buncombe, Haywood and Macon County as was his father William & grandfather James McDowell. William and James are in the Burke Co.
Census in 1790. Daniel was elected Sheriff of Haywood Co. in 1810 and served a one-year term. Daniel was a member of the NC State House of Representatives in 1817. Daniel does not appear in the 1830 census of NC. Daniel moved to Habersham and later Carrol County, Georgia about 1827. Neither death records nor estate reports have been found.
Daniel's brother John married Elizabeth Morrow. John McDowell moved from Haywood Co., North Carolina to McMinn County, Tennessee in 1816. W.
Clark Medford in his book, ( The Early History of Haywood County) Published in 1961, Waynesville, NC; writes several abstracts regarding "Flowery Garden" John, Daniel and also the John which I feel is my third great-grandfather Rev. John McDowell. On page 44, he states that "John McDowell did not confine himself to just one home. After coming here from Burke to the vicinity of Canton, he made improvements there (his Flowery Garden", etc.) where he at first spent much of his time. But meanwhile, he also bought tracts in the vicinity of present Lake Junaluska on Richland Creek, including his "Kaintucky Bottoms". Here he made "improvements', and lived at times----perhaps so he could be near Waynesville in his business of land speculation. His "Kaintucky Bottoms" he describes as "lying on both sides of Richland Creek." Often Hunting John and my John are confused. I think Flowery Garden consisted of more then one family and need to look at survey maps.
William's daughter Mary may have had a partner by the name of Dickey.
Her daughter Eliza McDowell married John Sutton.
I am not sure how Bennett Ivy, William Lord or Lazarus Tilly fit into this picture.
