He spent the early part of his life on a farm near Forest City, Illi. He moved to Rolla, Missouri, in 1898 where he was an active business man until the last five years of his life which was spent at his summer cottage on the Gasconade River near Jerome, Mo. On the day of his death , January 14, he had enjoyed the day fishing and when suddenly stricken was out on the water in a boat with his wife, laughing and talking. He is survived by his widow and six children, namely, Mrs. E. T. Johnson, James F., Kathern, Bertha, Nita, and Clarence Gilmore; also three brothers and one sister, Joseph, Frank, and Grant Gilmore of Mason City, Ill., and Mrs. Kathern Crafton of Springfield, Ill; also four grandsons and three granddaughters. All his children and grandchildren were at his funeral, also his brother Frank Gilmore. Funderal services were conducted at the Baptist Church in Steelville by the pastor Rev. G. Owens Baxter. The remains were laid to rest in Barnicle Chapel cemetery Sunday afternoon by that of his daughter Mrs. Henry Davis who preceded him two years ago. He was a kind and loving husband, a devoted father and a loyal friend, loved by all who knew him. He always had a kind and cheerful word for every one. Jesus while our hearts are bleeding, O'er the spoils that death hath won, Would at this solemn parting Calmly say, "Thy will be done." By thy hands the boon was given. Thou has' taken but thine own; Lord of Earth and God of Heaven, Even now, "They will be done." after 14 November 1926 Missouri.

One daughter, Marilee Brand, was born to this union. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.V. Carte. She was a member of the Steelville Presbyterian Church and the Martha and Mary Chapter of the Eastern Star of Steelville. Those who remain to mourn her passing are her daughter, Marilee Brand of Cuba, three grandsons, 2 great granddaughters, other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Juanita Carte were conducted August 31, 1985, 10 A.M. at Britton Chapel, Steelville, Missouri with committal prayers and interment in the Steelville Cemetery with Rev. Likely officiating. Pallbearers were Fritz Jonas, Slick Lichius, Ralph Kehr, Kermit Carr, Maurice Cape and Stanley Scott. All arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Bros. Funeral Home of Steelville, Missouri [uncited clipping] after 25 August 1985 Missouri.
