Alameda Times Star after 13 August 1987 Alameda, Alameda County, California.
  • Obituary: An obituary appeared in the Cancer claims life of Su Matheson, Xanthos founder
Sue Matheson, founder and executive director of Xanthos, Inc., an Alameda based family and youth counseling service, died of cancer at Alameda Hospital, Aug. 13.
Matheson had been receiving outpatient treatment since May, and was hospitalized in late July. She had successfully beaten two prior bouts with cancer in recent years, and fought her last battle until the end. Her family was with her throughout the ordeal.
Sheleaves her mother Gwen Landreth, her daughters Debbie Wondolleck, Kathleen Matheson-Woodfin, Michelle Matheson and her grandchildren, Jennifer and Matthew Wondolleck.
Xanthos Inc. started in Matheson's home in Alameda in 1969. It soon moved to a large building on Clement Ave. near Broadway. Then Xanthos incorporated youth counseling, student outreach, and emergency youth telephone switchboard and recycling programs.
Throughout her career, Matheson's efforts were dedicated to addressing the problems of youths and families, and the problems of substance abuse. She used her remarkable talents in administration at Xanthos and obtained over $6 million in public and private funding to channel into services for the community.
The community ersponded in kind by filling her hospital room with flowers, and cards were sent from all parts of the nation and from Europe.
Matheson was often asked to speak before national organizations on the subjects close to her. She advised the Carter-Mondale transition team on education and development, the California Youth Authority, the National Institute of Drug Abuse, the Committee on the Judiciary for the U.S. Senate, among many others. The Reagan administration selected her to represent the United States in an international conference on youth in Switzerland in 1985.
A list of her accomplishments would be many pages long. She had a unique ability to organize and network programs for the benefit of her community. Along the way, many national figures got to know her sharp mind and ever-present sense of humor.
Xanthos Inc. is currently located at 1205 Lincoln Ave. and provides a wide range of services to Alameda youth and families including Head Start schooling and services for the families of enlistedpersons at the Naval Air Station Alameda. The programs were established through Matheson's hard work and dedication.
At the next Alameda City Council meeting, the mayor will read a special proclamation and the meeting will adjourn in her honor.
A public memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church (1700 Santa Clara Ave.) Sept. 19 at 11 a.m., followed by a community picnic at Lincoln Park at 12:30 p.m.

Mayor Chuck Corica remembered how effectively she administered Xanthos programs and obtained funding for program growth.
Xanthos acting Executive Director John Schiller recalled how her unique and original approach cut through otherwise ordinary meetings.
Alameda County Supervisor Don Perata reminded the assembled friends of Matheson how she had not let her vision of service to the needs of youth be thwarted by a sometimes resistant city.
"She was truly a heroine in Alameda," he said.
"Amazing Grace" was played by bag piper Ozzie Reid, followed by the recitation of prayers.
A tree was planted in Lincoln Park that afternoon in her honor. in September 1987 Alameda, Alameda County, California.

The Mt. Vernon Cemetery is hard to find and is very much neglected. It is located in S20 - T33 - R12 in Sedan Township. It is located in a wooded pasture on top of a hill and was found only after much searching and inquiry. There was a school house at one time near the cemetery but the building is gone and only a pile of stones remains. There is a gate in the pasture fence at the road but the road up the hill is largely neglected. The first burial is that of Flora Severns, a 2 month old baby in June 1872 and the last is that of Vienna Young in 1934. The cemetery does have a good fence around it and several tall graceful old cedar trees. The stones are not cared for as many were stacked here and there and when one falls over it is left. G. Herman Guy read this on 1 May 1984.) at Sedan, Chautauqua County, Kansas.
