John Helms came across the plains from Missouri with a wagon train in the 1850’s to Fort Dalles. He went to Washington for some time and there he married Mary Jane Carey. Later they moved to Willamette Valley. A son, William Anthony, was born there. In the 1870’s the family moved to eastern Oregon; they spent the first winter on the flat near the head of Meyers Canyon in a log cabin. They moved then to what is presently known as the Helms place near Richmond. Daughter Amanda was born there.
They had cattle and horses. Everyone ran their stock together during the summer; then in the fall they would be gathered and seperated.
William and Amanda rode horses to the Waldron School, which was then located at the Price Place.
William married Mary Etta Thomas in 1898 and they lived at the Helms Place. Grandpa John Helms stayed with them. He raised a big garden and helped to preserve the produce from it. William continued to run the farm.
William and Mary Etta had a family of seven--Dorothy, Victor, Dick, John, Carl, Bob and Woodrow. All the children attended school in Richmond. Some of the teachers were Elsie Jobe, Alta Blann, Olive Johnson, Eula Wills and Katherine Lynch. There were about 20 students in one room, all eight grades.
Dick came to Prineville to go to high school. He worked for the Forest Service summers until he graduated then worked for them for 20 years.
He married Nina Mason at The Dalles on Christmas Day 1935. They have resided in Prineville since that day.
On Labor Day 1941 Dick started as a Forester for Pine Products, he was with them until 1969 when he retired.
