  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Three Women Drowned While Fording the Russian River at Cloverdale, Their Buggy was Upset
Mrs. Farley Abshire, her sister, Miss Violet Crow, and Mrs. Frank Daniels were drowned Friday afternoon while attempting to ford the Russian river at Cloverdale. The approach to the bridge crossing the river was washed out last winter, and through neglect, has never been rebuilt. As a result settlers have been compelled to ford the river, and especially at this time it is a perilous undertaking on account of the recent heavy rains, which have swollen the river considerably, the current being very swift. The women in a light wagon, were on the way to town. Mrs. Abshire has been accustomed to crossing the river, and Mr. Abshire apprehended no trouble in allowing them to make the venture. Indian Dick was the only witness to the calamity, and he says the women were about half-way across and were in the midst of hte current when the buggy overturned. He was unable to lend assistance, but hastened to town and gave the alarm. A crowd soon assembled and an effort was made to recover the bodies. A boat was procured and about half a mile down the river the body of Mrs. Abshire was found lodged in some willow brush. It was impossible to reach the body with a boat on account of the swiftness of hte current, and Indian Dick waded into the water up to his shoulders and succeeded in fastening a rope around the body, and it was pulled to the shore. Mr Abshire is a highly respected farmer in that vicinity and is left with two small children. Mrs. Daniels was only married a few months ago, and Miss Crow is survived by two sisters. Up to a late hour the body of Mrs. Daniels was not recovered. The body of Miss Crow was found about dark a little way below where Mrs. Abshire's was recovered. Coroner Pierce left for the scene this morning.
